Open the layers dialogue so you see what is going on.
Make a new transparent layer
Make your text
Move it around
Merge down to the new transparent layer
Drop shadow it

had a dpi setting of 95 dpi (or there abouts)
and your gimp setting was 72 dpi (or there abouts) so it would have come
out 72/95 smaller

It's disturbing to me that that there I can see the
'Screen type
the area that I brush over.
Once you select the area to be cloned, watch the 'mark' whilst doing
the cloning and avoid moving outside that area. Keep releasing the left
mouse key and moving back to the start of the area being copied

To answer my own question, I downloaded the plug-in from
http://cue.yellowmagic.info/softwares/separate.html
and it seems to function with 2.6 ok
