Well, trying to get use to doing layers, again... is it possible to take a RGB color image, and select a Layer:> New Adjustment Layer ( name it Channel Mixer )? Then Select that Layer Channel Mixer, and work with it, to adjust R/G/B and to select monchrome, with output channel Gray?
