Good to know. So far, I wrongly thought that Mint Live CD, for the
reason of being Ubuntu-based, would be devoid of GIMP.

Mike_tn, since you seem to be very knowledgeable about the content of

Choose the distro you are interested in, 1/2 way down the page, the far left
column shows the most recent version of a tracked package, (lots of packages
are followed), the other columns show what version of the program shipped
with which version of the distro

most major distrows provide fairly up to date versions of major programs via
their package management systems. I am using GIMP 2.6.11 on opensuse 11.3.
It is also not terribly dificult to compile gimp from source.

Two more pre-installed GIMP distros, One big, one small

First the big one, this is a very active distro:

Fedora 13 Spins has a Design Suite Live CD with these:

# agave, for automatically generating color schemes.
# blender, for 3D modeling, animation, rendering and post-production
# The GIMP, a raster graphics editor
# Inkscape, a vector graphics editor
# shotwell for managing photographs
# scribus for professional-quality document layout
# xournal, a sketching and document annotation program for tablet PCs
# dia, for creating flowcharts and diagrams
+more

download here:

http://spins.fedoraproject.org/design/#downloads

The other is distro is limping but has GIMP and Inkscape:
DreamLinux 3.5
download here:

http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/download.html

DreamLinux has a strong Macintosh look
Nice looking. Runs only on my older desktop from '06
The Fedora version looks runs really nice on my new laptop.

Seems all versions have mouse issues for me. I need a fix to slow down the
acceleration of a BlueTrack Microsoft Mice, both wired wireless have the
problem. I've been trying to find a fix in Fedora 13 Live CD, I am not
installing it just yet if ever. That's why I came here. I wonder how Ultimate
is with my mouse? Ubuntu LiveCD has fixes for mice speeds via the terminal.
Can't seem to find such a simple method with other Live distros.

One More Distro!

Linux Mint 9 has GIMP in the Live CD

And happily it's a Ubuntu based so the too-speedy-mouse-fix via the terminal
works in LiveCD too. The GUI is not flexible enough with Blue Track Microsoft
mice, just google for info on these Ubuntu terminal commands

sudo -s

root privileges are required

xinput --list --short

Gives device id list.
The next is my fix, so the values may vary for you:

xinput --set-prop insert your device name in quotes or id# Device Accel
Constant Deceleration 3
xinput --set-prop insert your device name in quotes or id# Device Accel
Adaptive Deceleration 5

YOU NEED A SANE MOUSE FOR THE GIMP !

I dont' see a model number on the box. When I go to YAST, install hardware,

There is no option for Bamboo.

Chalk up another vote for wacom. A friend of mine, who is an artist, has
been using a wacom graphire (think its a graphire 2) for 6+ years with gimp
and fedora. It works fine and when he decides to get a new one it will
definitely be a wacom.

If you have any problems there are a couple mailing lists: wacom-users, and

2002-02-28 Thread Geoffrey

I hate when this happens.

I've got it working now. My tablet, stylus and wacom mouse as well as
my ps2 mouse. I don't dare attempt to move both mice at the same time. :)

Both the stylus and wacom mouse work with GIMP and X. I could actually
use the stylus as my mouse in X, although that doesn't seem practical.

Problem is, I don't know what I did that I didn't do before. This last
attempt, I started by adding the debugging option to xfree for the wacom
devices. I restarted my xserver and then started checking out the xfree
log. I noted that it was getting huge, so I logged out of X and killed
the x server. From the console, I re-edited my config file commenting
out the debug statments. I restarted X and when I got it back up, I
just happened to move the stylus and noticed my cursor moved.

Now the only difference I know of is this. In previous attempts, I
restarted the xserver from the kdm login dialog box, where as this last
time, I did an explicit 'killall kdm' from the console. That's the only
thing I can figure made the difference. I would expect X to reread the
config file when you restart it though.

Thanks to all for the assistance.

You are right in that X will respond to either the graphics tablet or the
ps/2 mouse. I should add that I don't have the Wacom mouse. I only know
my configuration works for the stylus.

When I first got the my tablet, I let Kudzu handle it, and it installed it

worked without pressure or tilt sensitivity. If I remember correctly, the

I figured it out folks. Hope it might help others. I had to reboot my

mods were loaded all the log files looked right. Couldn't figure it

moved it away. When I returned it to the tablet, it was working.
Stylus as well. Bizarre

I think this looks good. Double check it against the other howtos.

I appreciate you sharing your config, I've found some differences and
made some changes. Still, I'm receiving the following error:

(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/event0
   No such device.

Another good guide is the Wacom-USB Micro Howto. The section dealing with
creating device files is
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Wacom-USB-mini-HOWTO-4.html

 Similar:

 usb.c: registered new driver wacom
wacom.c: v1.21.2 Vojtech Pavlik [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wacom.c: USB Wacom Graphire and Wacom Intuos tablet driver
 input0: Wacom Graphire2 4x5 on usb1:4.0
usb.c: wacom driver claimed interface ce154900

I think things look good from your kernel.

But I'm not getting the mouse output. One note I've still got my ps/2
mouse functioning, but it was my understanding that both mice should work.

You are right in that X will respond to either the graphics tablet or the
ps/2 mouse. I should add that I don't have the Wacom mouse. I only know
my configuration works for the stylus.

When I first got the my tablet, I let Kudzu handle it, and it installed it
as a USB mouse. This meant I couldn't use my ps/2 mouse, and the tablet
worked without pressure or tilt sensitivity. If I remember correctly, the
wacom drivers weren't even in place.

Geoffrey,
It is true that under Linux, you should be able to continue to use your
ps/2 mouse as well as your USB tablet. There are a few things you must
remember when doing so as well. Be sure to set both up using Sax2 for
X and that there are no conflicts in the settings. Second, be sure
that you are not trying to use both at the same time! Anytime the
stylist is on the pad, the mouse is deactivated, so be sure you remove
the stylist from the pad while trying to use the mouse! I don't
actually have a pad myself, but have read much about the setup for the
extra device from mails of those trying to get them setup correctly.
It looks like the settings are correct, as Sam points out, so both your
devices should be activated.

I had read that it was possible. I'd like to do so, as my ps/2 mouse
sit's on a 'floating' mousepad and it would be difficult to replace it
with my usb tablet/mouse/stylus.

sax2, comes with SuSE right? I'm not sure it will install on my

I want to make sure I understand this statement. My tablet has a place
to store the stylus at the top of the tablet. When you say remove the
stylus from the tablet, you mean don't have it on the tablet drawing
surface, right?

working with gimp/X. I picked one up a while back, studied the docs,
but have yet to get this thing to work.

I'd appreciate someone who might just share there xconfig file with me,
I'm running 4.1 here. From that point I could compare/contrast the
changes I've made that still don't work.

I use a Wacom Intuos USB, which uses the same drivers. A short checklist
of main things to look for is:

* Kernel drivers -- Make sure wacom.o is loaded in the kernel. The
command dmesg should produce lines including something like this:

usb.c: registered new driver wacom
0x21 0x21
input0: Wacom Intuos 6x8 on usb1:2.0
usb.c: wacom driver claimed interface c14eaca0
mouse0: PS/2 mouse device for input0
mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice
event0: Event device for input0

* XF86 drivers -- Make sure you have the right wacom_drv.o. You can get
that off of Fredrick Leipied's site at
http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~flepied/projects/wacom/.

* XF86 Config -- I'll include mine.  I think Lepied's example works pretty
well, as does the howto on the Linux documentation project.

Another site to recommend is Semyon Sosin's howto at
http://sem.best.vwh.net/linux/wacom/ If you've got a USB Intuos, the XF86
driver at this site fixes some tilt problems in Lepied's XF86 driver.
