Thanks for the suggestion. I was in fact calling up version 2.4-1.

It's About box shows 2.4.7.
gimp --version shows 2.4.7.
The latest gimp-help from Fedora 9 is 2.4.1.
Gimp 'About' still shows 2.4.7,
