The question was "Is it likely that the GIMP will ever support RAW
images such as those from my XT?" and your reply was "It allready
does, via plugins.. I use the dcraw plugin to manage my images from a
Pentax *istDS.  Its works like a charm." And my reply was about GIMP
and RAW support too, and what charm would beceome when it really can
work with the higher depth data instead of having to use downsampled
data. The plugins do that downsampling, later and with more control
than in camera JPEG, but you can not escape conversion with current
GIMP. And I could also point that dcraw, as separate app, converts to
8 bit (param, -2, write 8 bit PGM/PPM/PAM default, or the man page is
wrong) but I guess you will keep on saying something else.
