Not a real answer to the question, but as soon as (semi-)automatic image analysis, registering or measuring areas, distances, etc. are concerned, I'd recommend ImageJ (or Fiji) instead. I am a medical practitioner. I use GIMP to enhance line drawings I do for the purposes of patient education. We are currently doing a pamphlet for clients at the parenting unit where I work.
