Even faster: check "keep transparency" for the text layer in the layers
dialog and apply the gradient as usual.

Easilly. Select only the letters and apply gradient on them. Assuming text  
is on separate transparent layer, select that layer on Layers tab, and  
then Layers>Transparency>Alpha to selection.
