My system is FreeBSD and I use KDE 4.4.3.
I never had a problem with GIMP from the first version :) but I have now.
If I start GIMP from konsole I got:
gimp

It's normal! Just hit the TAB key to make the TOOLBOX disappear. With
the image window in focus, hitting the TAB key again will make it
reappear.

that is normal.
