I'm personally used the KDE Controlcenter  to remap "Move" action to 
Alt+MiddleClick and make Alt+Click free to gimp (action "None"). It seems to 
be quite comfortable for me...

I'm using KDE 2.x and you are absolutely right. Alt-Click moves my
windows. Does anybody know how to change that behaviour or point me to
some docs?

I'm betting you window manager (probably KDE, Enlightement
or, if you're luckey, Window Maker =) traps your alt+click.
Most window managers use alt+click+drag to move windows on
the desktop, but can be configured to ignore this for all or
just some windows, like all that belong GIMP's.

I don't know how this is done in KDE or E.
