Rightclick>Script-Fu>Alchemy>Erase every other Row
You can not only erase but fill with color every other row.  Or column. 
You can choose to alter even/odd row or column.
Don't forget to add Alpha channel (Rightclick>Layer>Transparency>Add 
alpha channel)

You can do that by making your own pattern.

It's easy.  Just create a 2x2 image of the checkerboard you want repeated.  
Save as a pattern (.pat I think).

Move the pattern file to the 'patterns' directory.  Without even restarting 
Gimp, click the refresh button at the bottom
of the patterns dialog.  Now you can use your pattern however you please.
