The color picker you are using picks the screen color, not the color from the image. You should use the color picker tool instead. However it appears that there's a bug in either GTK+ or the X server which causes the screen color to be reported wrongly. Please tell us exactly what version of GTK+ and X11 you are using and whether you are on Intel or PowerPC.
