I like it. Gives me a thought.

I stumbled across a cool effect as well. It creates an image similar to the emboss filters->distorts->emboss, but gives a smoother appearance.

open an image, duplicate the image as a second layer
images->colors->invert

Set the transparency of the top layer to 50%
Should look pretty much solid grey.

Now grab the top layer and slide it just a bit. voila, emboss, kinda.
