This is a reasonable question and i try to give you a simple answer.
Deviant art is generic image and arts website, maybe the first we go to 
for seeing some computer graphics, it is so full of stuffs that you  
find even inkscape and gimp groups and graphics.
I still have to search in google when i try to reach those groups on 
deviant art, however...
I think it was the only solution before inkscapegallery 
(http://inkscapegallery.net) and gimpgallery ( 
http://test.gimpgallery.net actually), not the best one for us.
If you look in it you will find many gimp and inkscape related graphics 
even on flickr and what i mean is that we haven't got a recipient for 
our graphics, images, animations and we used the ones we were able to 
find out in the web.
Now we have something especially made for everyone who's using 
opensource software to make graphics and i think it is useful, well...at 
least i hope this :-[

Second reason is  we don't want to stand as an alternative to great 
websites like gimptalk or gimpusers etc..etc..., our focus is on images, 
galleries, graphics, animations and we're trying to make it with the 
best tools available in the web.
You find forums on gimpgallery too, but this is because they are an 
image gallery website natural extension , if you create an account to 
publish your graphics on gimpgallery you will be able to post topic in 
the forums too, the forums still stand in the website and it's easy to 
move back to the galleries  or any other section.
The same is for the tutorial section, we didn't embed anything, we only 
link to other resources in the web  trying to enhance their visibility, 
'cause they are focused on such things like tutorials.
We're not trying to duplicate some already done website or resource, 
we're trying to make something different, completing.
We would like to work together to make gimp, inkscape, and open-source 
software in general well known, to give them suitable space and to 
guarantee them the relevance they deserve.

I think nobody can do everything...(this sounds good in italian, dont't 
know if it works in english...)
you will always notice what is the main goal of a website, you can't ask 
gimptalk to become an image gallery website or deviant art to  change 
the way it shows images and galleries for us or to support some special 
features for us.

I hope you to join us on gimpgallery, publishing your graphics because  
we need to build a good archive to show everyone what is the gimpgallery 
main reason. ;-)

Not to say that this isn't a great idea, actually it's a wonderful idea! But
why don't we just use the forums and sites already available, like
DeviantArt (http://the-gimp.deviantart.com/gallery/) or GIMPTalk (
http://www.gimptalk.com)? If they need to be redone, or revamped, let's get
with the developers and do it. Or is there another good reason why you
created this site? Just wondering.
