Yes, installing libtiff-devel fixed it. This requirement is also
indicated in the INSTALL text. Sorry to have bothered the list...

I just finished the compile (with python support this time!), but alas
no tiff support. So, something definitely got munged.

i did some checking around and these are probably two different bugs.  i
tried to comment this way on the bug report.

for my problem, it is a very very suspicious bug.  it would be very nice
to see it get fixed very very soon.

this has been fun today, i will readily admit to this!
