Newbie Q - Adding a pattern to canvas

I am a newbie to gimp and am very impressed with some of the graphics. I am trying and experimenting with creating simple images. How can I add a pattern from the "Pattern Dialog" as the background to the canvas? I tried Drag-N-Drop and it did not work. Any pointers appreciated. Thank you in
