16--bit grayscale tiff-images

Hi,

I have to evaluate 16-bit tiff grayscale images. A corresponding driver is
included in gimp. But the 16-bit data is converted to a 8-bit image
during loading by simply cutting the higher byte. Is there a possibility
to display and handle gray scale tiff images with gimp?
