Re: Newbie question: Transparent gradient
Thanks to all who replied. I finally got it to work. The missing piece of information in everything that I had been trying is that, unlike any other GUI-based program I have ever used, it seems that there are Gimp functions that one cannot find by wandering through the menus! The trick was to discover that I had to do an alt- click to be able to edit the layer mask, which I eventually discoevered in the Gimp manual, when I did a PDF search on "layer mask". I could find no menu item that allowed me to do this, just the alt-click trick. Thanks for everyone's help. Doc Evans

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (2000-11-13 at 1629.40 -0700): I have a small layer sitting on top of the stack. I would like to "fade" the image contained in that layer, left to right, so that one side (the right side) is completely opaque and the other side (the, er, left side, I guess) is completely transparent. I think what you need is a layer mask. It the appears as another thumbnail near the layer it is attached too. It works as a gray image, deciding what is trasparent and what not. Search the docs about how to use layer masks, or Grokking the Gimp site, it is a tech used a lot for logos and compositions. GSR
Re: Newbie question: Transparent gradient
Hi Doc, Right click on the layer in the layers dialog, create layer mask. Edit that, then right click on layer and apply layer mask. Alternately, click on the quick mask selection, and draw a black-white gradient across the mask. Quick mask back to selection, and cut. I'd also suggest checking out http://www.gimp-savvy.com if you are looking for a more approachable manual. The author has really done an excellent job on this book (you may consider buying it even after viewing it online in its entirety). Happy GIMPing, Seth Burgess [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- "D. R. I also looked in the User Manual, but basically I find that pretty close to incomprehensible. Experience shows that I understand what it tries to tell me only after I've figured it out for myself. Anyway, here's the simple question: I have a small layer sitting on top of the stack. I would like to "fade" the image contained in that layer, left to right, so that one side (the right side) is completely opaque and the other side (the, er, left side, I guess) is completely transparent. So far I figured out that I need to add an alpha channel (which I think I've done OK), and then I probably want to put a simple left- right gradient in that channel, but I'm blowed if I can figure out how to edit the alpha channel. It doesn't appear in the list of channels on the Layers, Channels, Paths dialogue, but I'm pretty sure that I've created it OK. So how do I get the alpha channel visible so that I can edit it? Thanks so much for any help. And remember, I'm a newbie so please be nice to me. Doc Evans __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Calendar - Get organized for the holidays! http://calendar.yahoo.com/

Mark Drummond: I want to make a banner, say 640 pixels wide by 64 pixels high. I have a 64x64 pixel image that I want copied into that banner 10 times. Is there a simple way of doing this besides cutpaste? this function is called tiling, like lining up tile after tile... clemens
Newbie question: Banners
Here's what I think should be a quicky ... (I have no graphic design experience, and have used the GIMP mostly just for format covnersions). Re: Newbie question.
Hi William, One thing that might help (if you haven't done this already) is move "Grokking the GIMP" to your windoze partition (or untar it there...). I think (correct me if I'm wrong) that your DOS C: drive is automatically mounted if you are a Mandrake 7 user. You should be able to find it at /mnt/DOS_HDA1 (I think). Doing that will enable you to browse "Grokking the GIMP" when you are in Windows as well as when you are in Linux. Apart from anything else, that will enable you to make more concrete references to the book when you are "doing mail". The Paths tab in the Layers and Channels dialog is a more recent addition (again, fellow GIMPers, correct me if I'm wrong). So, if you are running an older version you may not see it. BTW, in case you didn't know, there is also a Windows port of Linux at http://www.gimp.org/win32, in case you are interested. It is the approximate equivalent of the latest developers version of the GIMP. Enjoy it, and good luck ! regards, Andrew - Original Message - From: "William D. Downloaded "Grokking the Gimp", which seems worthwhile, and right away saw two screenshots I've not seen before and don't know how to get at. I'm running Mandrake 7.1, which installed Gimp 1.0.4, and the Gimp site identifies this as the latest stable release; except for development releases, I'm up to date here. The first screenshot is of the Tool Box, with 27 functions and two panels. There is an item called Toolbox at the bottom of the Images(?) menu (didn't write all this down and am now in windoze doing mail). I click on it and get nothing. Is this what the author has invoked? The sense I get from what he says there is that this is what comes up when he starts The Gimp. How do I get this to work, or do I have to go get it from a newer release? Or do I have a glitch that needs fixing? In the Layers window, there is a tab for Paths that mine does not have. How do I get at this? I haven't seen any more differences yet, as I stopped there to see if I could find out what is going on here. I know better than to go plundering around the system gratuitously grin, so if someone could tell me what might be going on and outline a procedure here, I would be very grateful! Thank you. Re: Newbie question.
Get a newer version. Although developer versions, they are still pretty much stable and the only way to get the things included in grokking. welcome to the wonderful world of GIMP!

real newbie question.
Hi, I've just subscribed to the list in the hope of learning more about how to use this marvelous piece of software. My question isa real newbie on. I have the new Gimp v1.1.24 and was wondering how do you draw straight lines. The normal Alt+click doesn't work. Also is there a cicle drawing tool in Gimp as I need to draw circles for a piece of art I'm doing. I know these are really easy questions but please understand I am new. Thanks in advance, Andrew
Re: real newbie question.
Hi, Shouldn't you have read: http://www.gimp.org/~sjburges/straightline/straightline.html Use the eclipse tool for circles, but hold either SHIFT, CTRL or ALT - I can't remember which. They have different functions. Jonathan Paton -- __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - Free email you can access from anywhere! http://mail.yahoo.com/
Re: real newbie question.
Hi, Opps, I forget there isn't an elipse tool but an elipse select tool. Use the elipse section tool to make the circle, invert (or fill), shrink selection, invert (or fill). Worth learning how to use layers, many effects require use of it. Jonathan Paton -- __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail - Free email you can access from anywhere! http://mail.yahoo.com/

Hi! My question isa real newbie on. I have the new Gimp v1.1.24 and was wondering how do you draw straight lines. The normal Alt+click doesn't work. Here you've got several possibilities: 1. select the pencil/brush tool and draw a point, then hold the shift key and move the mouse to the second point... 2. goto Image-Layers,Channels,Paths-Layers,Channels,Paths..., select the paths, create a new one and stroke it (circle button)... 3. select a one pixel wide rectangle of desired length on a transparent layer and fill it with color, then rotate and transform the layer... 4. ... Also is there a cicle drawing tool in Gimp as I need to draw circles for a piece of art I'm doing. Here, you've got again several possibilities: 1. select an ellipse (hold the shift key to select perfect circles), fill with color, contract selection (Image-Selection-Shrink...), cut the selection... 2. use the GFig plugin (should be included with recent 1.1.x)... 3. ... Hope it helps! CU, Michael ---=[ [EMAIL PROTECTED] ]=--- ---=[ http://technoid.xodox.com ]=---
Re: real newbie question.
Hi Thanks for all the help (and so soon). I was holding down the mouse key and trying to drag a staight line, but thanks to you all I now know better 8^) The eclipse tool with the shift key does indeed produce a circle though it is only a selection and when I have it positioned correctly and click to accept it, it vanishes as it would being a select tool. I was after drawing a solid outline in my present colour setting (not filled in). I've looked at the gimp web site and the tutorials there (there are no tutorials as yet for 1.1.24) but nothing seems to cover this. Andrew
