Start with text at a resolution which is greater than your needs.  E.g. if you want a 
block of
text to be 1000 pixels by 100, then create text at 4000 by 400.  Next rotate, blur 
slightly, and
then scale the image down.  Four times greater in each dimension would produce great 
results, but
would be very slow - experiment.

Does your fonts allow such a big size?  If not repost and I'll tell you how to get 
reasonable
results with the ones you've got.

This is the best solution I know of, although I'm no graphics expert.
