gimp turns rest of screen black

I'm using monochrome NCD X-Terms under SuSE 6.3.   When I run gimp, all 
of the other windows become black.  I also just tried to run the latest 
Gnome and everything is displayed in very dark colors.  Under KDE, only 
gimp and Mozilla do this; the task bar icons become unreadable.

Is there a setting to fix this?
