Subject: how do i save changed key bindings

now that I've learned how to customize my key bindings in GIMP
I'd like to be able to save them. according to the manual it seems that
these are supposed to be stored in $HOME/.gimp-1.1/menurc and the
defaults are supposed to be in /usr/local/share/gimp/menurc.
the problem is that I don't have either of these files. I've installed
GIMP 1.1.14 from a binary distribution off the Bull site. can anybody
tell me where these files are supposed to come from? or else how do
I go about saving changed key bindings?
TIA
