map_to_gradient problems

quite a few scripts / perl scripts in gimp 1.1.17 use this i've found,
but my gimp seems to think that its not a valid command... its kinda
annoying.  compiling it went off without a hitch, and there are no
traces of a previous gimp on my system... any ideas?  

some scripts affected: fire text, glowing steel, etc
