NS herself encounters this very problem in Beyond the Vicarage. She has returned home to stay with her mother in lodgings. Poor mother has not grasped that things have changed, and says to the landlady "Here we are" as if they'd been hanging around in the hall for them "Miss Vicky's train was late". The landlady visibly shuddered .....
