I think the more important thing is not how often you commit, but that
your final product of commits is reasonably split to communicate a
logical flow to the proposed changes. That organization helps reviewers
understand what's going on, but it also helps me convince myself that
the direction is good (and that each individual change is necessary and
correct). I get there through a combination of:

  - breaking the problem down ahead of time into logical steps, then
committing after each step is done. E.g., if I'm writing a feature
in foo.c that's going to need infrastructure from bar.c, it's pretty
clear the patch series is going to look something like:

  - refactor bar.c into reusable bits
  - start using reusable bits in foo.c

Take as an example the recent object-cache series I did in:

  https://public-inbox.org/git/20181112144627.ga2...@sigill.intra.peff.net/

I knew I needed to make the existing object-cache code from the
alternates struct available more universally, so I did that first
and then finally in patch 8 I could make use of it in the new spot.

  - committing when you discover a new logical breakpoint. This is
mostly intuition, but is often obvious. Say you're refactoring bar.c
into reusable bits, and you realize there are three distinct bits of
factoring.

Going back to that real-world example above, I found there were a
bunch of discrete steps: renaming the struct (patch 3), refactoring
path creation (patch 5), unifying the alt/non-alt cases (patch 6),
and then providing the cache helpers (patch 7).

Those mostly became clear as I was doing the work.

  - similarly, you might stumble over unrelated or tangential issues. In
that same series, I noticed an existing bug, whose fix became patch
1. That was definitely _not_ where I started, but as soon as I saw
that bug, I probably did a "git add -p && git commit" to file it
away (even with a lousy commit message, and then later I went back
and polished it with "rebase -i").

  - if you're lucky that all happens linearly. But most of the time it
doesn't. It's usually more like a rabbit hole, where you know you're
trying to get to point X, and trying to get there reveals all the
other problems. So at any given time during a series like that, my
working tree is a mess of related half-finished changes. I'll
periodically break that down into rough patches with "add -p" and
commit.

Those intermediate results often have minor compilation problems
(because of ordering issues, or maybe the whole state I had when I
broke it down didn't work yet, but I could start to see the chunks).
So then I take a pass with "rebase -i" ("rebase -x 'make test'" is
especially helpful here) and get something sensible.

So in response to your original question, I commit as often as once a
minute, or as rarely as a big chunk at the end of a day. :)

But in the latter case, I'm almost always going back to convert it into
a series of commits that each represent probably no more than a half
hour of work (and that could be read in much less time).

how often do you check in and with what tool(s)?

2018-11-13 Thread _g e r r y _ _l o w r y _
Hello, i use Git Bash and check in very frequently.

it appears there is a range from "extreme often" to "extreme very seldom".

Examples:

{me, extreme often, Windows} very granular, with a brief yet appropriate
comment [like narrating a story] per commit-i change a few
lines of code,
Alt+Tab to Git Bash, Git Add/Commit,
Alt+Tab back to some coding tool (example LINQPad).
[generally, i check in one source file before moving to the next source file]

{not me, very extreme seldom} in some project, not at all granular, in batches
such as 50 of 75 files that have been modified, all
are checked in with a single detailed comment as to the overall purpose of the
batched changes.

QUESTION: how often do you check in and with what tool(s)?

Thank you.

Forgive me for asking this question on a mailing list.

stackoverflow would probably kill such a question before the bits were fully
saved to a server drive.

Let me explain why i am asking and why i am not being a troll.

[a] i'm "old school", i.e., > 50% on my way to being age 72 [born 1947]

8 years behind..

[b] when i started programming in 1967, most of my work input was via punched
cards

'69, at school, post/compile/run/wait for post; 1 week
 (Maths club)

[c] punching my own cards was cool

Pin punching individual chads ;-)

[d] IBM System/360 mainframe assembler was cool and patching previously punched
card encoded machine code output was a fun risky but
at times necessary challenge.

Eventually the 370 at university.

[e] using command windows and coding batch files for Gary Kildall's CP/M and
the evil empire's PC/MS-DOS was how i accomplished many
tasks for early non-GUI environments (i still continue this practice even in
Windows 10 (a.k.a. please don't update my PC O/S behind
my back again versions of MS Windows)).
Engineer in electronics; software was an interlinked part of electronics
back then

[f] my introduction to Git was via a command line based awesome video that has
disappeared (i asked this community about that in a
previous thread).
Discovered in 2011 via 'Code News' article - Spotted immediately that it
solved the engineers version control issue because it 'distributed' the
control. I've tried a few of the Gui's.

BOTTOM LINE: virtually 100% of my Git use has been via Git Bash command line
[probably downloaded from https://git-scm.com/]

For me, and i suspect even for most people who live with GUI platforms, [a well
kept secret fact] using the keyboard is faster than
using the mouse [especially when one's fingers are already over one's keyboard-example,
closing one or more "windows" via Alt+F4.

Also for me, i am happy to change some code and/or write some new code, Alt+Tab
to Git Bash frequently, ADD/COMMIT, then Alt+Tab
back to whatever IDE i'm using [mostly LINQPad and vs2017]; i know that's quite
a bit schizophrenic of me-command line Git but GUI

QUESTION: if YOU use a Windows GUI for Git, i would appreciate knowing which

i have been asked to look at GUI versions of Git for Windows.
I presume that this is for a client who isn't sure what they want
http://www.abilitybusinesscomputerservices.com/home.html

https://git-scm.com/download/gui/windows currently lists 22 options.

That's nearly as bad as choosing a Linux distro ;-)

if i had more time left in my life and the option, because of my own nature,
i'd likely download and evaluate all 22 - Mr.T would
pity the fool that i often can be.

CAUTION: i am not looking for anyone to disparage other Git Windows GUIs.

Let me break down the question into 4 parts:

[1a] Which do you prefer: Git GUI, Git command line?
I use the three parts provided as part of regular Git and Git for
Windows, that is git-gui, gitk and git cli in a terminal (mintty)

[1b] What is your reason for your [1a] preference?
I have been in a general Windows environment for decades. The Gui format
with single buttons/drop downs that do one thing well, without finger
trouble side effects, is good in such environments. One cannot be master
of everything.

The cli is good for specialists and special actions, especially
precision surgery. The key is to avoid the "the surgery was a success
but the patient died" results.

[2a] if applicable, which Git GUI do you prefer?

git-gui and gitk are now the only two I use.

[2b] What is your reason for your [2a] preference?
Many of the other Gui's hide the power of Git and its new abstraction of
no longer actually being about "Control" (by 'management'). Now it is
about veracity. If you have the right object ID (sha1/sha256) you have
an identical original [there are no 'copies', all Mona Lisas with the
hash are the same]. Management can choose which hash to accept upstream.

Most other Gui's try to hide behind the old school Master-copy view
point that was developed in the 19th century for drawing office control.
If you damaged the master drawing the ability to make things and do
business was lost. Protecting the master drawing was everything. They
were traced before they went to the blue print machine. Changes were
batched up before the master could be touched (that risk again).

Too may Gui's (and their Managements!) still try to work the old way,
loosing all the potential benefits. They are still hammer wielders
looking for nails, and only finding screws to smash.

I've heard reasonable thin

Best way for good latency is to have a local mirror, but I guess
Googlers still aren't allowed to run AGPL software?

Alright. It could also be a general datacenter/networking
problem so https://status.linode.com/ (my VPS provider) is worth
checking.

Not too much; but could always be better on the software side.

Dunno, I'm not seeing RAM, there.

Depending on traffic, it's around 200MB per-public-inbox-httpd
worker (2 workers for 2 cores) when there's a traffic surge on
from popular sites. Memory usage is the biggest disappointment
and only happens when Varnish can't read fast enough.
Everything in the PSGI code is is streamed if possible(*).
My goal is to maintain <50MB per worker process, but it could
be tough in Perl5. Anyways $20/month gets me 4GB RAM (so I have
way more than I need).

CPU usage isn't even noticeable (only bursts) and I do other
stuff on that server all the time.

HDDs wouldn't work well at all and I've noticed differences
based on SSD quality with Xapian. Storage for Xapian+SQLite is
4-5x what's in git, so for this list, it's under 7G total
(but more will be needed for Xapian reindexing/compact and
git repacking).

(*) Individual messages for returning giant mboxes and threads are
all lazily fleshed out from skeleton data structures as the
client socket becomes writable (and quickly discarded after writing).
Technically it's all compatible with any PSGI server, but all
the streaming stuff is tailored to run on public-inbox-httpd.
But there's also git-http-backend memory use which comes in
bursts (bitmaps enabled, of course)

Sounds reasonable to me. If performance gets bad, that's just a
reason for people to help out (either with patches or e.g. with
donated VMs for hosting).

Speaking of the latter: what are your current resource requirements?
E.g. which of the dimensions in [1] do you not fit into?

There's https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2392. They even call it "mid:". :)

I don't know of any git URI scheme, though it's similar in spirit to
magnet: links. Those are a bit verbose, though, because they're really a
meta-format for a bunch of different content-addressable schemes.

Is performance a problem on public-inbox.org for you?

It should be pretty fast, but maybe there's corner-cases
and I haven't had time to pay close attention, lately...

I've also been sorta considering downgrading to a $5/month VPS
(from a $20/month VPS) to force myself to pay more attention to
performance while saving myself a few bucks. But I wouldn't get
to dogfood on SMP, anymore...

Heh, one of the (unstated?) goals of public-inbox is to educate
the users on how Message-IDs (and email in general) works.
And to that end...

More than dreaming, our goal should be to BUILD such a world :>
After all, it was my intense dislike of centralization which
drew me to DVCS and git in the first place.

I haven't checked, but are there existing/similar RFCs?
Surely somebody has tried to get

I agree: please don't stop using URLs.

Having the message-id in the URL is very useful for being able to
migrate to another server.

In an ideal world, we'd be habitually using URLs that reference a
redirector, in the same spirit as https://www.kernel.org/lore.html.
That way, there is a very restricted syntax to use (e.g. just
message-ids) that is stable and can be reconfigured to redirect to
another service as appropriate. In principle it also allows tricks
like redirecting based on geography or making the redirector go to the
user's preferred archive interface based on a cookie.

Thanks,
Jonathan

Yes, and I agree that the URL portability is one of the things I really
love about public-inbox (after all, I do have my own archive and now I
can follow people's public-inbox links into my very-fast local copy).

I guess I just wonder if I set up a mirror on another domain, would
anybody actually _use_ it? I'd think most people would just go to
public-inbox.org as the de facto URL.

> Anyways I hope to teach public-inbox to auto-linkify Message-ID-looking

> (but it's ambiguous with email addresses). But yeah, I don't
> like things being tied to domain names.

That would be neat, but I think it actually makes references less useful
in a lot of cases. URLs are universally understood, which means:

 - people who don't know about public-inbox can just follow the link
(and in fact, that's how they learn how useful it is!)

 - even for people who do know about it, they are likely to read mails
in their MUA. And most MUAs have some mechanism for easily following
   a URL, but won't know how to auto-linkify a message-id.

So I too dream of a world where I can say "give me more information on
this identifier" and my tools search a peer to peer distributed hash
table for it. But I don't think we live in that world yet.

At the very least, I think if we plan to reference without an http URL
that we would use something like URI-ish, like . That gives
tools a better chance to say "OK, I know how to find message-ids"
(though I still think that it's much less helpful out of the box
compared to an http URL).

Let me echo that appreciation. I have always kept my own archive of the

I've thought about mirroring it to a public server as well, just for
redundancy. But without the same domain, I'm not sure it would be all
that useful as a community resource.

Thank you for public-inbox!

2018-08-27 Thread Johannes Schindelin
Hi Eric,

I would like to take five minutes to thank you for public-inbox. It is
invaluable for me in the meantime. And I think I will never be able to
thank you enough for it.

Just a couple of things where it is super useful to me:

- Recently, my mail provider started dropping mails left and right. They
might even be addressed to me, and they never arrive in my inbox (and
not even in the spam folder: they just never arrive). I spent some ten
hours this past weekend to script identifying the mails in public-inbox
that I never received, and to weed through them.

It seems I missed some 4,000 mails. Thanks to you, I now saw those mails
(although I had to delete most of them after reading only their subject,
  in the interest of time).

- Many a times when my automated builds identified a problem with the test
suite, it was a lot quicker to use public inbox to identify the mail to
respond to than to use my mail program.

- Sometimes, I find myself in want of replying to a past patch, but back
in the day when it was sent I thought it would not be interesting to me,
so I deleted it. With public-inbox, I can easily get it in raw format,
i.e. put it back into my inbox so I can reply.

- I cannot tell you how many times I send a link to public-inbox to my
colleagues rather than forwarding a mail, because the former will give
them more context (and also semi-live updates in case somebody replied
to said mail after I sent the link).

A couple of things in the future that public-inbox will make possible for
me:

- You probably are aware of my GitGitGadget endeavor, a project similar in
aim to SubmitGit, but a lot more integrated with the GitHub experience
(and not requiring you to hand over your mail sending credentials to
  AWS).

One particular feature I found myself really wanting in SubmitGit (but
not possible due to its one-way design): I want my Pull Requests to be
closed once the patches are integrated into git.git's `master` branch.

While this feature is not available in GitGitGadget yet, I am well
underway there. I already have a notes ref (`commit-to-mail`, available
via https://github.git/gitgitgadget/git) that annotates commits in
git.git with the Message-ID of the corresponding mail. By "I have", I
mean: there is an automated task that uses public-inbox to keep that ref
  up to date.

I also have an accompanying `mail-to-commit` notes ref that maps
Message-IDs back to the corresponding commit in git.git. That notes ref
"annotates" the (non-existing) blob you get when piping the Message-ID
  with a trailing newline to `git hash-object`.

Again, this is information that would be absolutely unobtainable without
  public-inbox.

- Related, I want to annotate the GitHub Pull Requests handled by
GitGitGadvget with the corresponding name of the branch in
  https://github.com/gitster/git.

This requires that `mail-to-commit` I mentioned in the previous bullet
point, and therefore would not be possible without public-inbox.

- A feature I plan on introducing into GitGitGadget is to attach comments
to the GitHub Pull Request when anybody replies to the patch thread sent
  out by GitGitGadget.

Also this feature would be impossible without public-inbox.

- Another really useful feature I plan on introducing is to attach
comments to those PRs whenever a What's Cooking is talking about the
  corresponding branch.

Once again, would be impossible without public-inbox.

So thank you, thank you, thank you, for public-inbox!

Ciao,
Dscho

P.S.: FWIW I added a mirror of public-inbox to
https://git-for-windows.visualstudio.com/git.public-inbox, so that my
automated tasks, as well as my playing around, does not stress your server
too much.

I am not sure if I agree. People won't get confused, unless they
think too much and pedantically.

If you make refs/tags/$name point at a commit, it becomes a
lightweight tag, if you make refs/heads/$name point at a commit,
it becomes a local branch, if you make refs/remotes/$remote/$name
point at a commit, it behaves as a remote-tracking branch for the
named $remote. Anywhere else, it is just a random ref that happens
to point at a commit.

And notice that I never said "push" in the above. The verb I used
is "make" and that is deliberate. It does not make any difference
if you make such a ref point at a commit by pushing into a
repository, fetching from elsewhere, or running "git branch", "git
tag", "git update-ref" locally.

Related, this recent patch of mine:
https://public-inbox.org/git/20180429202100.32353-6-ava...@gmail.com/#t

I.e. might be worth talking about this briefly in the git-tag manpage as
well, i.e. that you can create a lightweight "tag" to a commit, but then
depending on where you push it it becomes either a branch or a tag,
which may not be intuitive to users...

As that sentence talks about a lightweight tag (i.e. a reference in
refs/tags/ hierarchy that directly points at an object of any kind),
another possibility would be to say

Otherwise a tag reference that directly points at the given
object (i.e. lightweight tag) is created.

"man git-tag" inconsistent about whether you can tag non-commit objects

2018-05-24 Thread Robert P. J. Day

embarrassed to admit i had no idea that you could tag non-commit
objects, only realized that when i was reading the man page and saw:

  SYNOPSIS
 git tag [-a | -s | -u ] [-f] [-m | -F ] [-e]
[ | ]

so i tried it and, sure enough, i could tag a blob object. but if you
read further into DESCRIPTION, about halfway through, you read:

"Otherwise just a tag reference for the SHA-1 object name of the
commit object is created (i.e. a lightweight tag)."
   ^^

which suggests only commit objects. finally, much further down, under
OPTIONS:

  ",
The object that the new tag will refer to, usually a commit.

so to clean this up, is it sufficient to just change that middle line
to say "object" rather than "commit object"? or is there more in the
man page that needs tweaking?

Greetings My Dear Friend,

Before I introduce myself, I wish to inform you that this letter is
not a hoax mail and I urge you to treat it serious. This letter must
come to you as a big surprise, but I believe it is only a day that
people meet and become great friends and business partners. Please I
want you to read this letter very carefully and I must apologize for
barging this message into your mail box without any formal
introduction due to the urgency and confidentiality of this business
and I know that this message will come to you as a surprise. Please
this is not a joke and I will not like you to joke with it ok,

With due respect to your person and much sincerity of purpose, I make
this contact with you as I believe that you can be of great assistance
to me. My name is Mr. ouadrago.karim from Burkina Faso, West Africa. I
work in African Development Bank (ADB) as telex manager. I have been
searching for your contact since you left our country some years ago.
I do not know whether this is your correct email address or not
because I only used your name initials to search for your contact. In
case you are not the person I am supposed to contact, please see this
as a confidential message and do not reveal it to another person but
if you are not the intended receiver, do let me know whether you can
be of assistance regarding my proposal below because it is top secret.

I am about to retire from active Banking service to start a new life
but I am skeptical to reveal this particular secret to a stranger. You
must assure me that everything will be handled confidentially because
we are not going to suffer again in life. It has been 10 years now
that most of the greedy African Politicians used our bank to launder
money overseas through the help of their Political advisers. Most of
the funds which they transferred out of the shores of Africa were gold
and oil money that was supposed to have been used to develop the
continent. Their Political advisers always inflated the amounts before
transferring to foreign accounts, so I also used the opportunity to
divert part of the funds hence I am aware that there is no official
trace of how much was transferred as all the accounts used for such
transfers were being closed after transfer. I acted as the Bank
Officer to most of the politicians and when I discovered that they
were using me to succeed in their greedy act; I also cleaned some of
their banking records from the Bank files and no one cared to ask me
because the money was too much for them to control. They laundered
over $5billion Dollars during the process.

Before I send this message to you, I have already diverted
($17.4million Dollars) to an escrow account belonging to no one in the
bank. The bank is anxious now to know who the beneficiary to the funds
is because they have made a lot of profits with the funds. It is more
than Eight years now and most of the politicians are no longer using
our bank to transfer funds overseas. The ($17.4million Dollars) has
been laying waste in our bank and I don't want to retire from the bank
without transferring the funds to a foreign account to enable me share
the proceeds with the receiver (a foreigner). The money will be shared
60% for me and 40% for you. There is no one coming to ask you about
the funds because I secured everything. I only want you to assist me
by providing a reliable bank account where the funds can be
transferred.

You are not to face any difficulties or legal implications as I am
going to handle the transfer personally. If you are capable of
receiving the funds, do let me know immediately to enable me give you
a detailed information on what to do. For me, I have not stolen the
money from anyone because the other people that took the whole money
did not face any problems. This is my chance to grab my own life
opportunity but you must keep the details of the funds secret to avoid
any leakages as no one in the bank knows about the my plans.

Please get back to me if you are interested and capable to handle this
project, I shall intimate you on what to do when I hear from your
confirmation and acceptance. If you are capable of being my trusted
associate, do declare your consent to me. I am looking forward to hear
from you immediately for further information.

Thanks with my best regards.

Mr. ouadrago.karim.
