Hi Harry, I installed git on Ubuntu 11.10, no previous git install. The version installed was 1.7.5.4. I wasn't able to access the site you listed because of lack of proper username and password. I was however, able to clone a project to my /tmp directory from Sourceforge.net.
I'm not sure this helps you much. Are you able to upgrade git to newer version?
