Hi Nermal,

You don't mention which is your primary OS. If it's Windows then head to https://gitforwindows.org/#contribute to get the full SDK that supports developing Git while on a Windows machine, along with their https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/wiki/FAQ.

You can arrange that you have both the latest release, _and_ your latest dev contribution, so you can compare results and avoid (mostly) total corruption of of your local copy... ;-)

The main source of info is the main git repo's README.md, Documentation/SubmittingPatches, Documentation/CodingGuidelines, Documentation/MyFirstContribution.txt.

The Git mailing list g...@vger.kernel.org (read the bit about `majordomo` for joining the list). The list archives are at https://lore.kernel.org/git/ and https://public-inbox.org/git/
Search for GSOC, and Mentoring

Also have a look back through the git-users archive for previous responses to similar requests.

Hope that helps,

Philip

Hi, I'm Nirmal Khedkar, student from India.

I wish to be a long-term contributer for Git and am a GSoC 2020 aspirant too. I'd love to contribute to Git because I love it and (in my view), its the mother of all FOSS projects out there, because most of them are built using Git.

I wanted to know whether the changes I make within the git/git repo <https://github.com/git/git> (which I've cloned onto my system) will also affect Git in my system overall.

I'm generally not reckless, but since Git is the backbone to all my projects, I cant help but be concerned about this :)
Thank you (and apologies if this is the wrong place to post such doubt).
