Hmm, well I'm out of ideas. You could go to the git dev mailing list and
ask there. You could also explain the higher-level goal what you are trying
to do. Perhaps someone can suggest a different way of achieving it.

I don't have any repo with submodules at hand to experiment with, but I'm
wondering if you can read and parse anything usable out of the .gitmodules
file?
