did is remove GMP.framework when building from source and
install the MacPorts version. Haven't had a problem since and don't
remember why I had the problem in the first place.

That was THE tip, thanks a lot! I've been using a tool called 'the
unarchiver' to extract the tarball, apparently is does not do it's job
very well...
