Joe, all tools are available. All that is needed is a _personal decision_ to
use them. It is a personal decision to
- not give all your contacts to whatsapp, gmail, apple, hotmail, facebook
but use an own cloud instance for it
- not drag all your contacts into whatsapp
but give them an XMPP
Most people already use slack for work and most of the projects with
high engagement use it, too. While I agree that I wish the open source
community would adopt open source tools, the reality is we still use
GitHub, Slack, and Zoom for the majority of them. Using the tools that

And why don't you just do the right thing and drop these semi-closed-source
stuff and use XMPP, about the only free/GPLed messenger service.
It has:
- no central provider
- no central servers
- server software free for anyone to install
- lots of free xmpp services around
- crypted or not crypted
We (at least many developers and some users) actively use Slack at
https://gluster.slack.com
While I agree that it's not a free/open alternative to IRC, it does get
many questions answered, and also gets communication happen related to the
project.
