Analog Modems?

This is going to sound odd, but I have a friend who lives in the boonies who only has an analog phone line for internet access and word has it they won't have broadband (or most cell signals) for a couple more years. I was wondering if anyone here might know of an affordable, stand-alone device

The only solutions that I know of are: 1. Satellite. I have not looked at satellite for a number of years. At one time, there was a satellite company that was pretty decent and had an agreement with Dish Network, but that agreement ended in litigation, and the 2 people I knew with their service
