Can we have a string freeze break for gnome-software to add more
information about file system permissions required by flatpak apps?
[…]

I realise you’re probably not going to be happy about this!

I’m actually happy that you approached this the right way and took us
into account. Bonus points for the clear presentation and listing the
strings so we don’t have to hunt them down. The timing is also not the
worst, so not much to be unhappy about!

  1. Add these new translatable strings now, in time for the 42.1
release (this week). This means the bug will be fixed, but the strings
will likely not be translated in many languages.

That would have been 10 days for three strings that are not too complex,
at a time when there isn’t much other activity in other modules. Looked
relatively reasonable. I would not have beent against landing this right
after you requested it. You said “this week” though, which threw me off.
Considering you just bumped, I supposed you indeed meant 10 days from
that date. Anyway, it’s too late for this.

  2. Add these new translatable strings after the 42.1 release, to give
more time for them to be translated ready for 42.2.

This one definitely looks great now.

  3. Don’t add these new strings on 42.x at all, and use the
inappropriate-but-already-existing “can read/write all your data”
string instead.

No, I don’t think this option is necessary at all. Worst case, we can go
with option 2.

So here is approval 1/2 from i18n for option 2.

Sorry for the lag, approval 2/2,

I’m taking this today as soon as possible. It will probably make difficulties as

of gettext should we target to have the bug fixed in the image?

My recommandation, in order to have a more updated version of packages would be
to use Fedora instead of CentOS. Version in the Fedora repositories is gettext
0.21. We can compile or use a backport repository to have this updated version
in the current image but it would break the KISS principles we need to follow to
have a long-term maintainable system.

Tell me what you think, if we should make the change and try with the new image.
Otherwise, I’ll try to find another solution with gettext compilation for
CentOS.

Thanks Guillaume,

Hopefully Andrea will tell us if using Fedora on OpenShift is an
acceptable option.

And yes, we would need gettext >= 0.21.

Hi Sophie,

What's your strategy about branching?

There used to be a branch per release, now I struggle to see any
structure in existing branches.

Frankly, it looks like all work done by translators in past releases in
release branches was wiped out. Doesn't look very fair to me.

Re: Release notes

2022-03-21 Thread Claude Paroz

Hi all,

I must admit I'm also a bit unmotivated now by those moves which
consider i18n as an optional part of GNOME.
We've also recently had issues with GTK where some strings cannot be
extracted with our current infrastructure (1), and that make us feel
like i18n is really a second-zone citizen of the GNOME world.

I'm not sure I'll continue dedicating my volunteer time in this context.
But maybe some freesh blood may give a new boost to GNOME i18n, who knows?

Shortcuts in DL workflow

2021-11-07 Thread Claude Paroz

Dear translators,

Following the issue opened by Yaron [1] about DL, I'd like to suggest
some modifications to the traditional Web translation workflow:

- Allow to submit a translation or a review directly without passing
through the reserve step. The reserve step still remains, of course, but
would be optional.

- Allow a committer to Submit to repository as soon as a .po file is
available in the workflow, without requiring a review or a Ready for
submit action.

This would shorten the minimal number of required form submits to 2
(upload the translation / submit to repository).

What do you think about this. I have the feeling that it would be an
answer to a concern that several coordinators have expressed in the
past, especially for smaller teams.

Kind regards,

Le 27.09.21 à 21:25, Sophie Herold a écrit :

Since I'm always interested in advancing the app reorganization and
presentations, like on apps.gnome.org, I would like to propose a new
*GNOME Circle* category (release set) for Damned Lies.

@afranke told me that it would be helpful to have a concept of how a new
category together with a cleanup/overhaul of categories could help with
the giant 50.000 strings main category. So I took a deep dive into the
modules, created some .ods-sheets, and came up with the proposal below.

I tried to align the proposal with the “Foundation Policy on Official
GNOME Software” SoftwarePolicy. Note, that the current category
structure violates this policy by branding a lot of software as “GNOME”
while it is not part of Core or Circle.

I would like to know if this looks like a good direction and how we
could proceed on this.

Best,
Sophie

| Module |    Strings | Description
     |
| -- | -: |
 |
| **GNOME 42 – Core**    | **25.000** | All Core modules except
“core-developer-tools”   |
| • *Essentials* |    *8.000* | Subset with shell,
Settings, Files, Web, and viewer apps |
| • *Non-Essentials* |   *17.000* | The remaining Core
components    |
| **GNOME 42 – Developer Tools** |  **7.000** |
   |
| • *Apps*   |    *2.000* | Builder etc.
   |
| • *Library Properties* |    *5.000* | Translated object
properties |
| GNOME Circle   |  2.000 |
     |
| Games  |  3.000 |
     |
| Evolution  |  6.000 |
     |
| Other Applications | 54.000 | Previously “Extra GNOME
Applications”    |

(All numbers are estimates and may change for various reasons. This
table is also available in a [GitLab] issue that I created.)

## Give smaller and new translation teams a way to focus

Estimated reduction of the number of strings by about 50%, from 50.000
to 25.000 strings, in the “GNOME 42 – Core” category. Additionally, an
“Essentials” sub-category provides a more realistic translation goal.

## More visibility for GNOME Circle apps

Translators that want to translate Circle apps, currently have to look
up what apps are part of Circle. Also, this again provides another
translation goal that is smaller than just the complete “Extra GNOME
Applications” category.

## Potential fallout

Examples for apps that would currently stay in “Other Applications” and
therefore could be treated with less priority:

  - geary
  - gthumb
  - pitivi
  - rhythmbox
  - shotwell

Examples for apps that would move out of “GNOME 42”:

  - evolution → “Evolution”
  - gnome-todo → “Other Applications”
  - gnome-tweaks → “Other Applications”
  - polari → “Circle”
  - gnome-builder → “GNOME 42 – Developer Tools”

Otherwise, it would be great if you could train Udesh until he's ready

Udesh, you should also try to follow the standard workflow on

And unless you have a specific reason to partially translate a module,

Fresh blood for Damned Lies

2021-06-18 Thread Claude Paroz

Dear team,

I'd like to announce that Guillaume Bernard kindly approached me to
propose his help regarding Damned Lies evolution and maintenance. He has
a good experience in the Python/Django world and already pushed some
interesting patches.

I'll let him present his plans on this list. This does not mean I will
suddenly disappear, but I will probably be a bit less present as I don't
want to be a hurdle for fresh ideas and progresses.

Kind regards,

Please calm down a bit.

We have witnessed at least several cases of the "blast from the past" since
GNOME 40 release when the translations from "master" were suddenly replaced by
the translations from the "old old stable" (these translations were actually
used in the release). Those translations have not been shown on the main page
until the "hidden" stable branch were created. It's a matter of fact.

Hi Yuri,

Do you have any real case we could use as an example for this odd
behavior (which at first looks more like a bug than a structural issue)?

Are there other discussion threads where this was discussed elsewhere?

weeks (so likely around the June 5/6 weekend):

Documentation and translation for GIMP 2.10 will continue inside this

As I am guessing it will require some action on Damned Lies website to

The strings are “In Progress” and “Applications” as headers in the

I can’t think of a better way to fix this bug, short of reverting the
change which introduced it (which would regress us on a different bug,
and cause 40.1 and 41.alpha to diverge, which would make maintenance a
little harder). I can’t find similar-enough strings which already exist
in gnome-software to use instead.

Looks like Damned Lies is actively maintained here:

Isn't adding a new help translation fairly rare, though? I don't think
it's so hard to commit it all at once when this happens?

That's correct, new language codes should be committed along with the
respective po files, not independently.

Damned Lies is able to add new help files at the condition the help

Hello,

I know Flatpak doesn’t necessarily want to be too associated with GNOME
so it doesn’t shy out other systems.
Still, a translation provided by one of the major DE could be an huge
improvement to today’s situation.

I have two questions here:
* Would we accept to take responsibility of Flatpak’s translations?
* Is it technically feasible for DL to handle the translations of a
project stored on GitHub?

If we answer "yes" to both, I would offer to Flatpak’s team to take care
of their translations, which they may or may not accept.

Hi Thibault,

There is more or less two level of translation supports in D-L.
The first one is "simply" a status of current module translations +
updated pot and merged po files ready for translators to use.

That's the case for all freedesktop modules.

The second is ability to commit translations from the Web interface. We
do not support Github currently for this feature.

So I would say that hosting translation stats would be fine IMHO. Adding
commit support is another story, even if it should not be so much effort
(to be evaluated, still).

Hi Kukuh Syafaat,

I guess the issue is due to using the "Inform of submission" action
instead of the "Submit to repository" action. The former is for those
having committed the file by an other mean that DL itself (e.g. by
command line).

However, it may be that DL didn't proposed the action because adding new
translations for modules help without LINGUAS files have to be done "by
hand", as machine-editing Makefiles is too brittle to be automated.

I'm sure someone with GNOME Gitlab commit rights will do the action for
you soon!
