Re: how/where to find Gnome Preferences Tool?

2021-04-06 Thread Tony Houghton
I haven't seen your new thread. Changing the focused window colour/contrast
should be fairly easy, and I think you could do it with a gtkrc file
instead of writing a whole theme. You probably won't be able to resurrect
scroll buttons though. They were phased out years ago, so the functionality
has probably been removed; not something you can simply enable with a theme
option.

Thanks very much, Tom.  That's a lot of themes to choose from! I'm
concerned though most with functionality.  Specifically, I'm after (1)
scroll buttons on the windows and, (2) I'd like to have much more of a
color difference of the window having the focus from the other windows.
I've opened a separate thread about scroll buttons (if that email is

Themes are a developer, not a user topic.

Maybe start @

Thanks for that link.  It's exactly what I'd want were I to get into gtk
development.  Unfortunately, I can't do all that right now.  I've done a
bit of development in the past, but at the moment I have many other
things I need to do first.  Maybe later. First I need to set up this new
system so I can use it. So for the time being, I'm just looking to make
some quick configuration changes... those which are still possible.

Carl,

Using preferences (Settings is what I think we're talking about) and
gnome-tweaks is not at all difficult-- well, finding what needs to be
changed is the most difficult, and knowing the correct terminology to

What's much more difficult is making changes in gnome (or are they in

Themes are a developer, not a user topic.

Maybe start @

Thanks for tracking that down for me.  It could explain difficulties
I've been having.

Could that be the reason I can't create a custom theme...? is that
capability no longer available?  Also, has the capability to create
"drawyers" also gone?

Hello Ken,

for how to use preferences in Gnome or how to use gnome-tweaks, you could
explore forums
like
ubuntu.com or askubuntu.com

There are minimum differences, when you use Gnome in different distros.

This way gnome-tweaks works.
You only need to know the version
for searching in forums.

Ken, that Desktop User Guide is very old (see the last modified times
of files in https://people.gnome.org/~bmsmith/) and it does not refer
to GNOME 3 desktop environment used in Fedora 33.

Looking at and following the Desktop User Guide
, I was trying to
create a new theme (and do a few other things explained there).  I
already have and have been using the tweak tool quite a bit, but what is
explained in that userguide does not correspond at all to the what's in
the tweak tool... iow, it doesn't seem to be the same app, the
Preference Tool, mentioned in the userguide.

Does it still exist...? or is it perhaps included in a package by
some
other name?

"gnome-tweak-tool" is a transitional package. The new package name is
"gnome-tweaks". But both names will work.

Do you mean the Gnome Control Center? Open the activities overview (left
OS/Windows key) and and type "prefe..." or "settings" (it's "Einstellungen"
in German. Don't know the exact phrase for English). The preferences icon
should appear. Click hat.

Hope it helps,
