Ngewi,

Thank you for the reply. XML issues understood. Including the notes field

a very interesting project to watch.

Re: Announcing GnuCash Android v1.4.0-beta1

2014-07-25 Thread Kim Wood
Hello Ngewi,

I installed v1.4.0-beta1 on my Kindle HDX 8.9, and imported a large (approx
21 Mb) GnuCash XML file. I have not had a lot of time to look play with it
yet, but all accounts and transactions appear to have imported correctly.
Well done. You have created a very useful Android addition to the GnuCash
environment.

Please continue to make the .apk file available for those of us who side
load into Kindle tablets.

Re: Announcing GnuCash Android v1.4.0-beta1

2014-07-25 Thread Kim Wood
Hello Ngewi,

Some early transaction importing observations:

1. Large files import successfully.

2. All accounts are created successfully.

3. All transactions up to and including today's date import successfully.

4. Transaction account, category and amount are imported successfully.

4. Any transaction with a future date DOES NOT import.

5. The notes fields DO NOT import successfully - this field is blank in all
transactions in the Android version.

6. The number field DOES NOT import.

7. The reconciliation status field DOES NOT import.

It's a pretty good first effort in importing transactions. With a few
improvements, it will be very good! My bug fix priorities would be the (1)
memo field, then (2) future dated transactions, then (3) the number field,
and, finally the (4) the reconciliation status filed.

I will keep testing the imported data.

Regards,

Kim

Re: Release 2.5.3 crashes randomly

2013-07-11 Thread Kim Wood
David,

I agree with John's caution about old new registers. I am running Windows
8, and have been using the GnuCash unstable 2.5.3 builds extensively. I
usually run the latest nightly build, and enter transactions daily. I do
not recall having a crash over the last month. My experience is that 2.5.3
is usually stable. Very occasionally, a new nightly build just won't run.
I agree with Derek that crashes are to be expected with this unstable
branch, and I am comfortable with that. However, I am not seeing any
crashes. Mixing old new registers?

Re: Where can I find the portable version of Gnucash 2.4.0

2011-01-04 Thread Kim Wood

James,

I frequently use GnuCash from my USB key too. The PortableApps.com people
do a really good job, but as you have stated, have not released GnuCash
2.4.0 yet. I am sure that they will at some stage.

I use X-GnuCash 2.4.0 which you can download from www.winpenpack.com It is
stable, and is a very good portable implementation which will play well with
your PortableApps.com menu. I have used their 2.3.x beta series for many
months, and am now very happy with their 2.4.0 portable version.

If you are using John Haller's PortableApps.com menu, then simply create a
X-GnuCash subdirectory in the PortableApps directory, and extract the
winpenpack zipped X-GnuCash_2.4.0_rev11.zip file into it. When you refresh
of load the menu, X-GnuCash will appear in the menu. It remembers all
settings, and will run very happily in portable mode allowing you to take
GnuCash on the road and run on multiple machines.

If you want to run without the PortableApps.com menu or any other portable
launcher menu app - then just create the X-GnuCash directory wherever you
want to put it, and extract the x-GnuCash_2.4.0_rev11.zip into it. To run
it, you simply run the toip level directory X-GnuCash.exe file.

I am a fan of the PortableApps.com menu, so that is my preferred method to
launch my various portable applications.

Kim

GNUCASH WINDOWS - PROBLEM SOLUTION

2010-07-19 Thread Kim Wood

Dear Dev's,

THE ENVIRONMENT: Windows Vista, recent GnuCash Windows nightly build
(particular build does not seem to be important).

THE PROBLEM: From time to time in the forums someone will post the GnuCash
will not get past the splash screen issue. It seems to come up with some
replies signalling some sort of DLL or software conflict issue. Well, I
came across it myself recently, and no amount of searching the forums,
reinstalling, copying a range or related directories, and anything else I
could think of solved the problem. Even a WinPenPack portable GnuCash
installation in C:\Programs could not get me a working GnuCash environment.
However, my USB key portable WinPenPack version still ran happily (up to and
including the most recent nightly build).

THE ISSUE: I don't really know, except to say that I frequently install and
uninstall a variety of open source freeware software. I religiously use
Glary Utilities and CCleaner to keep the registry clean defragged. I have
good anti virus software. I have run GnuCash for a long time, but must have
broken it recently by leaving some incompatible DLL's somewhere on the PC
that GnuCash picks up before the good, clean stuff it installs itself. I do
not take RegShots every time I install something new, nor do I install trial
software into a VM - perhaps I should. I do not run GnuCash after every new
software installation to check it still runs. It should not be that
fragile.

THE QUESTION: Has anyone had a good look at how a good GnuCash installation
can go bad? I am happy to attempt to break a GnuCash installation on one of
my PC's to see if there is anything we can learn that may make future
versions more robust. Is anyone able to suggest where there may be some
weaknesses in the the current Windows implementation, or where there is a
liklihood that GnuCash DLL's may be substituted by DLL's in other
directories on the PC?

THE WORK AROUND: Scorched earth! I formatted my PC and installed Windows 7
on my Visa box. Extreme? Yes. I just could not get GnuCash to work any
other way. I have not had to do this to get any other important application
(for me) to run in years, if ever. GnuCash is running fine now on Windows
7. I will be vigilant to try to identify how it breaks, should I have the
same situation sometime in the future.

Does anyone have any suggestions of areas to investigate? I know I should
be more careful with my PC environment if I don't want to break it in
future.

Kim Wood

Wiill Recent Tabs Patch be Reverted Before 2.3.11 Released?

2010-03-16 Thread Kim Wood

As previously posted, tab labels broke again with Windows nightly build
r18883. I have followed the email traffic on this issue, and understand
that the reason for this is being investigated in the Windows environment.

IMHO this feature should be reverted until a fix is found. It has
fundamentally broken the Windows nightly build version again since r18883.
Checked Windows nightly build r18908, and tabs still not displaying a label.

I have previously posted a bug report on this when it originally broke. Is
the correct etiquette to update my earlier bug report to reflect the bug is
back?

I suggest that the recent patch that broke tabs again in the Windows version
is reverted before the release of 2.3.11.

Thanks Geert,

I hope the original patch writer does not get discouraged by this. The
patch just needs to include the option to disable the feature to be useful.
And by default, to be off.

Kim Wood

Please back out r18428 - editable 2nd date field

2010-02-13 Thread Kim Wood

The has been some discussion in the user forum at
http://n4.nabble.com/New-Transaction-field-in-the-register-td1476778.html#a1476778
about patch r18428. IMHO this patch is particularly bad and should be
removed for two reasons.

Firstly, in double line register display mode, the two dates displayed for
each transaction produces an extremely confusing display to the user. It is
not at all obvious what the second date's purpose is - and there is no
option to disable it.

Secondly, the editable second date filed allows manipulation of the
underlying transaction data. GUI manipulation of transaction creation date
data surely sets a dangerous precedent.

I understand the patch writer James Raehl was seeking some additional
transaction functionality - but the result is a cluttered and confusing
register, with no option to turn off the second date filed. I believe that
it harms the users experience of the interface rather than enhancing it.

Can this patch be backed out until such time there is an option provided to
disable it? I believe that the default position is that the option should
be turned off.

Am I alone in thinking that the register in double line mode now looks less
user friendly?

Kim Wood
