For the record, bug #797550 was fixed in 3.9, and I have confirmed the fix as
of 3.906 at least for MacOS Catalina. (10.15.5)

Create an *Asset* account labeled something like, ‘Allowance for Doubtful
Accounts’.
You can place it as a child of the official Accounts Receivable account if you
like, or create a new parent labeled ‘Other Accounts Receivable’ and place it
as a child of that account.

Frank, good points. I was on a smartphone and not trying to be 100%
accurate (reigning in the spell checker is already more than I can
handle). I think GnuCash does differentiate at least some of those types
and maybe save one of each, but I was not able to test.
