I have solved this problem by downloading and reinstalling Gnucash 5.4.

I'm afraid I never tried it before; I just thought the triangle was for
sorting, like on the 'Accounts Name' column, and clicked it to see what
would happen
and thought 'Oh, that's useful' and went from there.
Yes, the program is working as it should, all transactions are present and

Thanks Stan, I checked that and I have read and write permissions, folder
and file.
Just for fun I enabled W/R for 'everyone' - still no change.
