Is there any note in the GnuCash help indicating that column widths and
open window information are apparently only made persistent or persistently
updated if the user selects File > Quit or selects the red x which is in
the upper right corner of the GnuCash window in most operating system
desktops
Glad to help!

Using File/Quit did in fact save the settings so I'm good to go. I do have
a backup strategy too - SyncBack Pro syncs 3 PCS on LAN. Does backup to 2
external HDs. And use BackBlaze for cloud storage. I get a bit anal about
the financial files so I even do the SaveAs too!!
Thanks for all the help.
Ya - I guessed the SaveAs was the culprit. I don't need to - its just a
redundant move to save a 4th copy. I'll try your method.

Does the same on Win 10 - X'ing out of Gnucash or using File >> Quit saves
the prefs correctly.
Doing a save as to a different file name saves the prefs in C:\Users\<>\AppData\Roaming\GnuCash\books under the NEW FILE NAME - this
probably unsets the flag to say the prefs have changed so when you co
I will tomorrow David. Thanks.

OK I just tried X'ing out of Gnucash and using Quit from the top menu on
MacOS - both times the timestamp on the prefs file was updated. Will try
on Win 10 shortly.
Do you want to try just opening your usual file from C: location changing
some column widths and then quitting Gnucash without all t
OK - will do. Will advise later.

Try using quit from the menu instead of killing the window with X.

I first do a Save As (to save a backup to an external drive). Then I do a
Save As to the original (desired C: drive) location. Then Click upper right
X to close the program.
When I reopen GC the same windows/accounts open right up.

Jack,
I'm not seeing this issue on 4.2 on Win 10, Mac OS or Ubuntu 20.04...
What os are you running on, do you have write permissions on the
preferences file which I think from memory is .gnucash.gcm. If you go in and change column widths in Gnucash does
the file timestamp get updated when you Q
Jack, Did you quit the program when you saved the file? Do you find the
same windows and reports open when you re-start GnuCash and re-open the
file? Which OS are you using?

Using 4.2 on Windows and macOS, both remember the column width settings.
Adjust column width, quit, re-open and column widths remain as I adjusted them.
Except for the Description column, which isn’t remembered.

I'm running 4.2.
Adjusted column widths - looked at the View Menu and Register & Register
Default options in Preferences - found nothing. I saved the file with the
adjustments in place and poof - modified widths gone when I reopened the
file. To be honest I could never get them to save in 3.x vers
Jack,
Prior to the 4.x releases it was necessary to close the program, possibly
with the window(s) open to save the column width settings. I think there
was a change for the 4.x series, but I have not migrated yet, so I cannot
be sure.

How can I save the form with the column widths I've set for each account
while in use so they stay in place permanently?
