While GnuCash can use MySQL (as well as Postgres and SQLite) as a
backend, the entire db is read into memory at start-up, rather than
separate records being accessed like a normal db-based app. Thus, it is
not currently set up to do what you are looking for, but that is a

Randix,
Be careful here
Your gnucash file should be named something along the lines
of 2020-12-Dec.gnucash
These files with date and time embedded in the name are backup files - it
seems like you opened a backup file from Dec 5 and worked on it at some
stage???

You have a problem.
You are working on backups.
Nelson... although I have GnuCash installed on 2 separate laptops, I only
actively use GnuCash on one laptop (with the data regularly backed up on an
external drive). The other laptop installation is just in case my primary
laptop crashes (and I could then copy one of the backed up data files for
Good point. Can GnuCash work as a front end to a database that does
record locking, such as MySQL? Otherwise, how would work done by
multiple other users on their copies of the data be safely merged into a
single master file?
It's clear, though, that GnuCash is designed mainly for single users. A
GnuCash is currently not set up to be multi-user. Multiple people can
work in the same file, just not at the same time.

As Nelson pointed out there is no real problem with accessing a GnuCash
data file from multiple computers as long as the computers have access to
the file location. This is OK provided access to that file by the separate
users is not simultaneous and each user checks that the other users

I have my gnucash file saved in a Dropbox account. Multiple people can
access the file so long as they have the Dropbox account credentials.
Gnucash generates a LCK file when the main file is opened, so another
person trying to open the file at the same time as someone else will see a
warning
I currently use QuickBooks for business accounting software. Never liked it and
am in the process of replacing our server. We have a 5 year old version that is
no longer supported so if there’s a problem migrating the program we’re out of
luck. I would like a simpler program. QuickBooks is too
