I don’t understand your assertion that this would be an “incompatible change of
options.” The option to remove hyperlinks is available on the Balance Sheet,
but not on the Transaction Report. What about that is incompatible?

Um. It's historical. And nobody has requested removing links in amounts
loudly enough to warrant an incompatible change of options. If there is
demand, in which tab should the option reside?

display as hyperlinks, as I see for accounts under the Balance Sheet report

You can disable links but it's not obvious in the transaction report.
You'll need to modify the style sheet used (edit menu) then reload the
transaction report.
