Re: [GNC] Set up

2021-01-14 Thread David Carlson
Welcome to the Gnucash user maillist.

That is the normal way GnuCash makes automatic backups. You can read about
the process here: <
https://wiki.gnucash.org/wiki/FAQ#Basics:_Filenames.2C_Directories.2C_...>

Eventually Gnucash deletes older backups.

Most users place their data files in a dedicated subdirectory of their user
space such as Desktop/Checkbook. You can call it whatever you want.

Re: [GNC] Best way to upgrade from an old version (2.6.14) to current

2021-01-14 Thread D. via gnucash-user
Adrien,

John Ralls provided advice that, because the OP had not used Gnucash much in
version 2.x, he might, in fact, be able to jump directly from that to 4.4. That
advice, as I noted, is non-standard, but may work-- and if it does, then
there's no real problem.

I think you misunderstood.

No, you should not 'update' your GnuCash installation *with your
existing GnuCash file* straight from 2.x to 4.x!

You have two paths:

1. retain your existing GnuCash file and go through the multi-step
update process outlined in this thread and in the wiki. Then when at
4.4, start incrementally importing your Quicken/Quickbooks data from
where you last left off when you imported to GnuCash. (note, you may
have edited that old data in the other app, so that might not be a good
idea)

2. ditch the (as you noted) 'stale/old' GnuCash file entirely (maybe
save a backup in case), remove GnuCash 2.x, install GnuCash 4.4, and
then start incrementally importing your Quicken/Quickbooks data - from
the beginning of your use of Intuit's software into a fresh GnuCash file.

Which one you choose depends on how much you've been using the two
side-by-side and how much you've invested in the existing GnuCash file.
I seem to recall from your original post, it was imported long ago, you
played around with it lightly, and you are just getting back to it now
to make a permanent switch. If that is the case, I would go for option
#2 as there will be no data loss and you'll get better quality imports
now with 4.4.

Printing is indeed the major known issue with flatpak gnucash. It's due to an
incompatibility
between flatpak and webkitgtk. Our report system is based on WebkitGtk and
hence printing
is not working.

It's a bit strong to state "flatpak puts things in the wrong directories". The
directories aren't
wrong. It has consciously chosen to store its files in paths outside of the
usual system
directories. That's the whole point of flatpak - to be independent of the
system paths. The
selinux violations are because RHEL has not kept up with flatpak's file system
hierarchy rules
(or is not really interested in doing so). That is unfortunate.

Close.

You are correct that flatpak gnucash won't see your system printers when you
try to print a
report (you can however print checks). This is not a flatpak limitation per se,
but an
incompatibility between webkitgtk and flatpak. Our report system is built on
webkitgtk so
for now we have no way around this.

I don't remember that, but I'm currently not following this closely either.

> Also, I think I recently saw a change that put MacOS (if not all
> systems) back on Webkit2 which should have resolved this issue.

WebKit2 is the step forward from Webkit1. Windows is still on webkit1.

If I remember correctly with webkit1 we had the option to directly create a pdf
from a report.
That feature is no longer available with webkit2 and hence dropped on MacOS and
Linux.
Webkit1 on the other hand doesn't handle page breaks properly, so text may be
split in the
middle on page ends. Windows users will still experience this issue.
And lastly, Webkit1 is no longer available on linux, so we were forced to
upgrade to webkit2.

Open your saved report.

Click “Options” button.

Click “General” button in the window this brings up.

Adjust Start Date and End Date to your requirements.

Click “Apply”.

If you want to use the adjusted report, using “Save Config”.

Well, I'd open the saved report, then the options for that report, select the

the new configuration.

In what way is this not working for you?

Re: [GNC] UK specific: MTD - Making Tax Digital

2021-01-14 Thread Derek Atkins
Chris,

As someone sitting across the pond from you... I think there is definitely
interest in MTD in GnuCash. The issue, I think, is going to be the GPL
nature of anything you would contribute to GnuCash, and the challenge of
obtaining the API key for said GPLed code. Having said that, I suspect
the developers would welcome a PR that includes this functionality.

I forgot to mention, you can skip that last bill from the neighbor if
you prefer and just enter a manual transaction paying them like so:

Cr. Bank/Cash/etc.
Dr. Sales-Payable

Adrien

On 1/14/21 9:48 AM, Adrien Monteleone wrote:
The usual "I am not an accountant and this is not accounting advice"

Some questions would need to be answered first.

Are you taking possession of the goods from your neighbor, or is this
just a consignment type operation? (meaning, do you have any financial
or legal interest in the goods, can you walk away with them, or can they
take them back with no issue?) I understand this might be quite an
informal arrangement, but unless you are buying the goods from the
neighbor, I wouldn't think there is an occasion for entering a bill for
them.

I would think a holding/suspense liability account for the funds
collected on behalf of the neighbor would work, named something like
'Sales-Payable'. (similar concept to sales tax collection) The full
amount collected from the end customer drops here first from their
invoice. (posted against AR, which itself is reduced as the end customer
pays you.)

Result: Dr. AR, Cr. Liabilities:Sales-Payable

Note, if transactions take place on the spot, and they don't need some
other 'invoice' than their credit card receipt, you can do this with
manual transactions and avoid the Business Features and AR. The Autofill
& Duplicate Transaction function can help cut down on data entry.

Do a manual transaction periodically or each time, reducing the holding
account balanced against an income account. (Dr. Sales-Payable, Cr.
Income:Commission)

If you didn't issue invoices in the first place, but used manual
transactions, you can use a single transaction for this at each sale,
but you'll have to employ some math. (GnuCash can do math in the amount
fields)

Dr. Bank/Cash/etc. (however you immediately received funds)
Cr. Income:Commission (entered as the sale amount * commission %)
Cr. Sales-Payable (amount collected, minus the commission split, if you
enter splits in this order, this amount will already be filled in.)

Then periodically or as needed, issue a bill 'from' the neighbor (as a
vendor) for the amount you collected for them minus the commission,
which should be the balance of the Sales-Payable account. (Dr.
Sales-Payable, Cr. AP)

Then pay them the balance of funds. (Dr. AP, Cr. Bank/Cash, etc.)

2021-01-14 Thread Adrien Monteleone
Bill, as long as the list address is included, that is fine. (so
everyone can benefit from the discussion, this is a group list, not a
one-to-one discussion just between you and I, though it may turn out
that way)

I don't think you needed to create a new stylesheet, just edit the
original. (unless you need different footers for different use cases)

A printable invoice is just a report, and like all reports, has a
General tab in Options where you can select the Stylesheet. Change it to
your new or edited Footer stylesheet and you should see the result with
the bank info.

Unfortunately, there is no way to make the Footer stylesheet or any
custom stylesheet, the default. You *can* save the resulting report as a
Saved Report Configuration, but this requires you first pull that up
next time you need an invoice, then go back to Options to select your
Customer and Invoice#. I find it less clicks to just change the
stylesheet each time.

I'm still floundering with this. I created a new footer style sheet called

when I print or create a pdf.
What am I missing?

Re: [GNC] Commission sales

2021-01-14 Thread Adrien Monteleone
The usual "I am not an accountant and this is not accounting advice"
applies here. The following is simply how *I* would approach this:

Adrien

Since early in the pandemic we’ve been selling some of our neighbour’s stuff,

Our income here is really just the commission since the end customer knows it

order and delivery process.

The only way I have figured out to account using the business features is to
enter an invoice to the end customer and a bill for the full amount from the
neighbour. Then I have to hack around in the income and expense accounts to
make the difference between the two show up as commission.

This is because I can’t put an income account in a bill.

Is there a more elegant way of handling this?

Re: [GNC] UK specific: MTD - Making Tax Digital

Hi Mark,

This is a bit of Java code that takes a csv input and then submits to HMRC
and has been approved for production for over a year. I have been impressed
with GnuCash and surprised that it does not have a MTD VAT submission
option. It will require a bit of work to integrate with GnuCash and I am
reluctant to do this if there is very limited interest!

Thanks to all who have responded so far. Let's leave it out there for a
couple of weeks and see if there is any more interest.

Thanks,
Chris

like. No matter to us, register whichever address you prefer.

To your original question though, I already answered it. Please read

The short version is, no, because of the way the report is designed,
your best/only bet is using a spreadsheet for that level of styling for now.

Re: [GNC] Recent list in file menu

2021-01-14 Thread David Carlson
I seem to recall that question came up recently but I cannot find the
answer for releases after 2.3.x, which is incredibly stale.

At any rate, the answer probably varies depending on which release of
GnuCash you are using and which operating system you have on your machine.
If you tell us that information someone with a better memory than I have
might be able to answer.

Hi Chris,

FYI, I've got a bridge which takes data out of Gnucash accounts and
submits. It's Python code which uses the GnuCash Python modules at the
moment.

https://github.com/cybermaggedon/gnucash-uk-vat

I've initiated a submission to get production credentials which is with
HMRC, we're testing Fraud API compliance at the moment.

How far did you get? Have you got HMRC production signoff yet?

Mark.

Hi Chris,

Yes, I'd be interested. I'm presently using a CSV import to the LibreOffice
spreadsheet bridge by CHM Software, but having a bridge integrated into GC and
saving a few steps would be nice indeed!

Subject: [GNC] Styles of different items in GNUcash reports

I am trying to fix an issue with the formatting of different items in a
   simple journal or general ledger.

What I am trying to achieve is to format the primary sorting key in
BOLD, but it appears that this item does not have s style of its own.

In my case the primary sorting key are the accounts The primary sorting
key in the generated report seems to be using the background color as
defined for the subheader (in e.g. the technicolor style).

But it does not appear to have a text style of its own, it appears to
use the test style as defined for the normal text field Example of
   report

1000 Bank account One <-- I want this bold

   01.01.2020 Transfer 2000 EUR

   02.01.2020 Transfer 1000 EUR

   Total 3000 EUR

1100 Bank account Two <-- I want this bold

   03.01.2020 Transfer 6000 EUR

   05.01.2020 Transfer 4000 EUR

   Total 1 EUR

Does anyone have an idea of a workaround or any ongoing improvement to
   allow this in GNUcash.

Right now my only option is to export the HTML, import in Excel and do
   this manually.

Feels like a waste of time as the report function in GNUcash is
   otherwise very nice and easy.

Anyone who can point to a GNUcash developer forum, for these types of
   issues.

   Thank you for all advice
