[GNC] Bulk moving transactions

2020-06-30 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
Hello,

I am running GnuCash on Mac.

Somehow a month’s worth of credit card transactions ended up in the top level
Bank Accounts account. Is there some quick way to move or edit them to the
appropriate credit card account? It’s not possible even to move them manually,
as far as I can tell, without jumping to the corresponding Expense account for
each, and then changing the source account there.

Thanks,

Nike

Thank you both.

Indeed, the Transaction Report in 3.5 works for what I want (Although I would
have never guessed it from the name.)

[GNC] OFX Import requests (Mac OS)

2019-04-27 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
Hi,

I have a couple of questions/requests about OFX importing on a Mac.

Would it be possible to get the active field in the import window highlighted,
so one can see which line is being edited? As it stands, clicking on an entry
to adjust the account brings up another window for account selection, but
there’s no indication of which transaction is being adjusted, so if you take
your eye of the screen to answer a call or get distracted by something else,
you have no idea which line you were working on when you go back. It’s a small
point, but it can be annoying, especially when trying to reconcile an account
with a statement or fix a bungled import, when there are lots of lines to be
changed and lots of things to look at.

Second, is there a way to edit the memo field prior to import? I cannot find
out how to do this. Clicking in that field just brings up the account selection
window.

Thanks in advance,

Nike

[GNC] Tips for reporting

2019-04-27 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
Hello,

I am trying to get a more granular look at one of my expense categories, and
hoping that one of the gurus can tell me how best to do it.

Basically, I want to be able to set a date range, and see all the transactions
in that range grouped according to the merchant, using the information in the
description field.

Can this be done within GnuCash? I have played around with some subset of the
built-in reports, but can’t find one that does it right away.

The only way I can think of is to export to CSV and then use a spreadsheet, but
I hope to avoid that because there’s no way to set the date range in the export
as far as I can tell.

I am on Mac OS, for the record.

Thanks,

Nike

Thanks. That cut it down to 322MB. Still pretty portly compared to most

[GNC] Mac OS application size

2019-01-28 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
Hi,

I just downloaded GnuCash 3.4, and noticed (somehow I never paid much attention
before) that the application bundle is 400MB in size.

This seems excessively large to me — the only applications I have that are
larger are Word, Excel, Pages, and Numbers.

So I am wondering if there’s any way to slim the bundle down, and perhaps
remove unused components?

Thanks.

[GNC] Mac OS cursor positioning

2018-12-05 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user

Hi,

There have been several posts over time (including my own) about
problems with cursor positioning in Mac OS.

I thought I had this problem solved, but it seems to have come back.

Here are some things that seem to be relevant, in case a developer is
looking in to it.

i) The "open new windows in tabs" in system preferences is implicated.
This setting seems to have been changed or reset in Mojave; it's now
called "prefer tabs when opening documents" (can't remember what it was
before) and by default it seems to be set to "in full screen only"

ii) GnuCash has a show tab bar option in the window management. Turning
this on seems to cause problems.

iii) Using the Mac OS option to hide and show the menu bar automatically
seems to cause problems.

I solved my most current instance of this problem (in GnuCash 3.3) by
playing around with (i) and (ii).

Re: [GNC] Stange Mac OS issues (update)

2018-08-06 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
Hi John,

I found the source of the problem. One machine was set to automatically hide
and reveal the menu bar, which seemed to confuse GnuCash. Turning it off seems
to resolve the problem.

John,

Neither machine has a Retina display. One is an 11 inch MacBook Air (which
works fine with GnuCash) and the other is a 13 inch Air (which doesn’t). Both
are running 10.3.6.

I tried creating a new GnuCash data file on the 13 inch machine, and couldn’t
even get through the setup process, since clicking with a mouse doesn’t work
reliably.

Both have tabs set “in full screen only” and all options in the dock

[GNC] Stange Mac OS issues (update)

2018-08-04 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
Hi all,

This is an update to my earlier post reporting malfunction of the mouse pointer
under the current version of Mac OS,

John Ralls responded that it was connected with Mac OS system tabs.

I have tried toggling the system tabs, but it makes no difference — the
behaviour continues.

However, I have done some more testing and found some results that may be
useful to track down the bug.

I have a single GnuCash file, on a USB key. I have been running GnuCash on two
different machines, and the USB key goes back and forth.

On one machine, there is no problem at all with the mouse. Everything works as
expected. This was the machine used to create the GnuCash file in the first
place.

However, on the other machine, many GnuCash interface elements are broken.
Windows appear with strange sizes, and radio buttons are often hidden. The
mouse click in list seems to select the item below the one clicked.

I note that the two machines in question have different screen sizes and
resolutions; if there’s a problem with mouse/screen coordinates, perhaps there
is something in the GnuCash data files that ties the resolution and screen
coordinates to the machine that created the file?

I hope this helps.

Re: [GNC] Strange Mac OS interface problem (John Ralls)

2018-08-03 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
I have tried toggling the Mac OS level tabs as instructed by Dave, but it
doesn’t make any difference.

The weird mouse behaviour seems limited to certain windows only.

I have no problems navigating the main GnuCash account window or any of its
tabs; clicking on a line selects that line.

But if I try (say) to import an OFX, then the weird behaviour comes up. It also
comes up in the file opening dialog box.

I don’t recall having this problem on my machine at home, which is where I had
been using GnuCash for a while, on the same file. I will try that machine again
this weekend, and see if it works.

Re: [GNC] Strange Mac OS interface problem (John Ralls)

2018-08-02 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
Thanks.

Where do I turn off MacOS-level tabs? I am running GnuCash with default
settings.

Re: [GNC] autocomplete not working in 3.2

2018-07-04 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
Thanks for this clarification. It works the way you say.

For what it’s worth, there are a number of small bugs in the Mac OS file
handling and UI in 3.2.

Eg, if you move or delete a the primary gnucash file, and click on a different
one, gnucash seems to get confused.

Re: [GNC] autocomplete not working in 3.2

2018-07-03 Thread V. Vatsal via gnucash-user
I am new to GnuCash, but I can confirm that autocomplete doesn’t work well on
Mac OS. I would expect that typing “foo” would match “Expenses:Food” but it
doesn’t match anything unless you type the whole string “expenses:foo” which
rather defeats the purpose.
