People should keep in mind that the format into which you export gnucash
reports and the format in which you send to an accountant (or present to
a board) need not be the same.

None of the boards (of the organizations for which I keep books) are
presented the raw reports as produced by gnucash. I use the DATA of
those raw reports to produce the finished product. Not really more work
because that means that I don't have to make the reports exclude
extraneous data (data that is historical). For example, for the
organizations that have interns, vendors paid in some previous period,
etc. there is no reason the board wants to see all these accounts in a
current report (with the amounts all zero for THIS period). Just as easy
to remove these in the after edit as to exclude when running the report.

Thus if the accountant wanted reports in PDF, and assuming you have the
capability to create a PDF from something else, that is simply an after
step.

I have used that approach for some years, but am interested in the new
feature of Gnucash 3.0 which would allow csv export. I will trial both
with my accountant, and see what she requires and prefers.

In the newest version 3.0 you have to ability to export all transactions
into a CSV file via the file menu.

It’ll be easier for your accountant because he’ll can just open your
file as a spreadsheet and doesn’t have to copy information manually.

And every decent professional accounting software should be able to
import custom CSV files.

Fair enough. It's just that in my experience the reports that GNucash
generate are normally saved a PDF files, so you can't easily cut and paste
information from them to use in a spreadsheet.

It all depends on where you live. Here in Oregon accountants must use
proprietary tax preparation software (all requiring Microsoft, of course).

I send my accountant the balance sheet and income statement as PDF
attachments to an e-mail message for business taxes. For personal I add the
trial balance report so she can extract deductible expenses more easily.
We've been doing this for years.

Re: Sending data to my accountant

2018-04-05 Thread Nelson Handcock
The gnucash platform is free to download and install, so when my accountant
had the same issue I suggested he installed gnucash, and then I just sent
him a copy of my gnucash file.

Most accountants that are familiar with computer-based accounting systems
should have little trouble figuring out how to get the information they
need from a copy of your file

Hope this helps.

The best way is probably to generate the reports your accountant requires and
save/print them for your accountant.

The option are to Export as pdf, or copy the report (which is in html) to
excel or libreoffice calc where you can post-process the data before sending
it to your accountant.

What is the best way to get my gnucash data to my accountant for him to check
