I could be misunderstanding, but the report you seem to describe sounds more to
me like an Income Statement. (Reports > Income & Expense > Income Statement -
same as Profit & Loss)
Does it look something like what is in this PDF?

try Transaction Report
* accounts / accounts - choose income+expense accts
* display / subtotal-table - enabled
* sorting / primary-key - account name
* sorting / primary-subtotal - enabled
* sorting / secondary-key - date
* sorting / secondary subtotal - monthly
