I believe timestamp checking must be anyway. Just lock files cannot
be a very reliable solution. A lock file could be deleted. I am not
talking about more exotic hard links when lock files will be saved in
different directories.

When we click on a spreadsheet file, Gnumeric every time opens the file in
a new program instance without any checking if this file was already open.
Thus, it is extremely easy to accidentally overwrite the file content.
