This is about a solved problem. My question is just: Why me?
I was running a version 1.12.33, build at the end of September from the
git-code. Since then, each new attempt to build from the updated
repository ended in the same error:

For me that ends up in ~/.local/share/recently-used.xbel but note that the file
contains non-gnumeric stuff too.
