Yes. It might be simpler to have a single UID containing only the
email address and with neither

There's nothing forbidding it. Whether it's a good idea depends on your
own particular use case.
I'd recommend thinking long and hard before doing this, as it's possible
you'll confuse some badly-written workflows

Some time I use the name x and sometime I use a shorter form of that
name but the e-mail address is the same.
EG:
