It seems that there is a conflict between different build systems.
Which is not not surprising.

Exactly, under /usr/local… and without messing with the system installed
binaries or libraries. Some things, like openssl libraries, it will not link
automatically to avoid some issues with system provided libraries, but most
things are then symlinked to the usual places to provide the brew installed
binaries, etc.

It actually tracks dependencies very well… for anything installed and built
with Homebrew. It’s a bit like speedo.mk for everything, or the missing apt-get
for Mac, some things are “bottled” binaries, some things it’ll build for you,
in any case pulling any dependencies as needed.

In this case when trying to build a tarred source brew is not in the picture at
all and all dependency handling is manual / left for the source configure
scripts. And things don’t quite work although the configure script gives an OK
on the pre-make checklist.

I really have no rush with this. Just debugging for others and happily using
the stable branch.

I can dig into this myself at some point. It’s also possible whoever is
maintaining the homebrew repo for gnupg might solve the issue and push an
update there.

I don't know any details about homebrew but it seems to install software
in versioned directories. I guess it is missing a dependency tracker and
thus when installing Libgcrypt an older (but sufficient) version of
libgpg-error gets installed alongside. GnuPG does not pick up that one
but a different installation of libgpg-error and thus you run into these
problems.

May some someone with more OS X experience look at the problem?

Re: [Announce] GnuPG 2.1.0 "modern" released

2014-11-11 Thread Ville Määttä
Hi,

That’s somehow just the result of running ./configure. Running a fresh (fresh
untarred source, no speedo runs) configure reported this for me:

…
configure: checking for libraries
checking for gpg-error-config... /usr/local/bin/gpg-error-config
checking for GPG Error - version >= 1.15... yes (1.17)
checking for libgcrypt-config...
…

That’s a homebrew installed /usr/local/Cellar/libgpg-error/1.17.

I don’t have CFLAGS set to anything. Mac OS X 10.9 and using homebrew for most
things. The only thing I do is run ./configure && make in the untarred
gnupg-2.1.0. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s something special in the system
but I’m not consciously doing anything other that the usual make routine.

I also just did a fresh run of speedo.mk and in that case got the same error as
Nicholas originally reported (“_default_errsource”).

Yes, Werner is very good at not breaking things that don't need to be
broken. But in fact, it is the fact that scripts depend on this that
made me think that this might be a case where things *should* get
broken, because this is actually a serious security flaw, and the
scripts in question need fixing. In many cases, no one is going to be
around to read the warning you suggest.

Just a thought.

Detached signature ambiguity (was: [Announce] GnuPG 2.1.0 "modern" released)

2014-11-10 Thread Peter Lebbing
On 10/11/14 12:02, Nicholas Cole wrote:
> So the confusion is
> that you have one single command that deals with verifying both a
> detached signature and with a file that contains a signature?

Yes.

> Is the best fix for this to introduce two new commands

That seems extreme. Although you could add commands that make it
explicit what you want, removing the existing, ambiguous one would cause
massive breakage of deployed scripts. Werner is always very cautious
about doing that.

Maybe this avenue of thought can help come up with a good solution. When
people verify a detached signature, they usually have two files named:

file.ext
file.ext.sig

If GnuPG encounters this situation, but file.ext.sig is not a detached
signature, it could display a big fat warning:

WARNING: file.ext.sig is NOT a detached signature; the file file.ext is
NOT VERIFIED!

This does create some related issues:

gnupg_2.1.0.tar.bz2
gnupg-2.1.0.tar.bz2.sig

or

gnupg_2,1.0.tar.bz2.sig

These files can trick people into thinking they have the same filename.
This suggests this is either not foolproof or you need normalisation.
The extent of normalisation seems to make this unattainable. And
combining Unicode characters make matters even worse.

So it definitely has problems. But it might help think of the most
proper solution.

Peter.

Is the point that you can have a signed file that makes you THINK you
have verified a file when in fact you haven't? So the confusion is
that you have one single command that deals with verifying both a
detached signature and with a file that contains a signature?

Is the best fix for this to introduce two new commands

--verify-detached (requires two arguments)

and

--verify-file

and then to make everything that simply calls the old command --verify
break? Or is that too radical?

I guess that this bug exists at least since 1.0.4 and I consider this a
serious flaw. I am thinking about a proper solution which limts
breakage.

As a quick minimal fix I changed the instructions on the website.

For OpenPGP Curve25519 is only defined[0] for signatures,
certificates, authentication using the Ed25519 scheme. For encryption
the only valid options are those found in RFC6637[1].

We need to generate a lot of random bytes. It is a good idea to perform
some other action (type on the keyboard, move the mouse, utilize the
disks) during the prime generation; this gives the random number
generator a better chance to gain enough entropy.

So Linux has the same bug.

Sorry, I was not clear enough in my description.

I created a main key first (tested with RSA main key and also with a
couple of the ECC curves). Then I added subkeys via the --edit-key
dialogue (addkey). (In that dialogue there is an option 12.) I can ask
GnuPG to generate a curve 25519 encryption subkey. But (sub)key
generation fails. However, it will generate a curve 25519 signing
subkey.

I see curve 25519 if I go via option 11 at that point. It can be
selected and will create a main key.

However, here's a small mistake. This should read:

gpg --verify gnupg-2.1.0.tar.bz2.sig gnupg-2.1.0.tar.bz2

For people not acquainted with this syntax: when --verify has multiple
arguments, the first one is the detached signature and the remaining arguments
are the signed files.

And finally, there is another little thing wrong with the announcement:

I agree that one's confidence in that content should be suspect, but the
value is not zero. I am happy that you have removed the support,
btw. Simpler code is important.

Yes, that was idea too -- just use 1.4.
And one can't re-encrypt data signed by another.

In many cases, in my archives, I have email that is clear signed, which was
then encrypted, and stored that way.

If so, I guess this is a reason to keep GPG classic around for verification

Re: [Announce] GnuPG 2.1.0 "modern" released

2014-11-06 Thread Robert J. Hansen

You may not install "modern" (2.1) and "stable" (2.0) at the same
time. However, it is possible to install "classic" (1.4) along with
any of the other versions.

Is there any guidance as to how to install this on Fedora 20? gnupg2 is
a protected package there: it literally cannot be removed without
completely breaking the system. (The cause of the total-breakage: yum,
the Fedora package manager, has gnupg2 as a dependency.)

The timing of GnuPG 2.1 is a little unfortunate: we're already past the
beta freeze and final freeze is coming up in just a few days. It's
unlikely GnuPG 2.1 will make it into Fedora 21, and I doubt Fedora will
shift from 2.0 to 2.1 outside of a major release, meaning Fedora users
will be left using 2.0 for six months or so.

In the grand scheme of things this is an annoyance more than anything
else... but still, an annoyance. :)

Right. It is anyway useless because you have to assume that such
signatures are broken. If you want to decrypt you should have 1.4
versions somewhere. See the whats-new-in-2.1 article:

1.2 Removal of PGP-2 support

Some algorithms and parts of the protocols as used by the 20 years old
[PGP-2] software are meanwhile considered unsafe. In particular the
baked in use of the [MD5] hash algorithm limits the security of PGP-2
keys to non-acceptable rate. Technically those PGP-2 keys are called
version 3 keys (v3) and are easily identified by a shorter fingerprint
which is commonly presented as 16 separate double hex digits.

With GnuPG 2.1 all support for those keys has gone. If they are in an
existing keyring they will eventually be removed. If GnuPG encounters
such a key on import it will not be imported due to the not anymore
implemented v3 key format. Removing the v3 key support also reduces
complexity of the code and is thus better than to keep on handling
them with a specific error message.

There is one use case where PGP-2 keys may still be required: For
existing encrypted data. We suggest to keep a version of GnuPG 1.4
around which still has support for these keys (it might be required to
use the `--allow-weak-digest-algos' option). A better solution is to
re-encrypt the data using a modern key.

Re: [Announce] GnuPG 2.1.0 "modern" released

2014-11-06 Thread Ville Määttä
Hi,

I can’t use speedo.mk as I get "GnuPG has already been build[sic] in-source”.
I’m not going to replace 2.0 at this time so I won’t remove it. With just
‘make’ I get an error on linking libgpg-error. I happen to have versions 0.16
and 0.17 but not 0.13 under the referenced path.

Actually is is INSTALL_PREFIX - I posted a wrong name once.

According a another OS X developer, the last beta worked just fine.

default_errsource is defined by init.c which is included in libcommon.a
which in turn is part of the objects linked to t-sexputil. Thus there
should be no problems. Someone (but not me) needs to have a look at the
build log.

I removed gnupg-devel@ becuase I do think it makes sense to

Hi Werner,

Building on OS X using

make -f build-aux/speedo.mk native INSTALL_DIR=/usr/local

gets what looks like most of the way and then fails with the error
shown below. Am I the only person experiencing this, or are others
hitting the same problem?

Best wishes,

[Announce] GnuPG 2.1.0 "modern" released

2014-11-06 Thread Werner Koch
Hello!

The GnuPG Project is pleased to announce the availability of a
new release: Version 2.1.0.

The GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG) is a complete and free implementation of
the OpenPGP standard as defined by RFC-4880 and better known as PGP.

GnuPG, also known as GPG, allows to encrypt and sign data and
communication, features a versatile key management system as well as
access modules for public key directories. GnuPG itself is a command
line tool with features for easy integration with other applications.
A wealth of frontend applications and libraries making use of GnuPG
are available. Since version 2 GnuPG provides support for S/MIME and
Secure Shell in addition to OpenPGP.

GnuPG is Free Software (meaning that it respects your freedom). It can
be freely used, modified and distributed under the terms of the GNU
General Public License.

Three different versions of GnuPG are actively maintained:

- GnuPG "modern" (2.1) is the latest development with a lot of new
features. This announcement is about the first release of this
  version.

- GnuPG "stable" (2.0) is the current stable version for general use.
This is what most users are currently using.

- GnuPG "classic" (1.4) is the old standalone version which is most
suitable for older or embedded platforms.

You may not install "modern" (2.1) and "stable" (2.0) at the same
time. However, it is possible to install "classic" (1.4) along with
any of the other versions.

What's New in GnuPG-2.1
===

  - The file "secring.gpg" is not anymore used to store the secret
keys. Merging of secret keys is now supported.

  - All support for PGP-2 keys has been removed for security reasons.

  - The standard key generation interface is now much leaner. This
will help a new user to quickly generate a suitable key.

  - Support for Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is now available.

  - Commands to create and sign keys from the command line without any
extra prompts are now available.

  - The Pinentry may now show the new passphrase entry and the
passphrase confirmation entry in one dialog.

  - There is no more need to manually start the gpg-agent. It is now
started by any part of GnuPG as needed.

  - Problems with importing keys with the same long key id have been
addressed.

  - The Dirmngr is now part of GnuPG proper and also takes care of
accessing keyserver.

  - Keyserver pools are now handled in a smarter way.

  - A new format for locally storing the public keys is now used.
This considerable speeds up operations on large keyrings.

  - Revocation certificates are now created by default.

  - Card support has been updated, new readers and token types are
supported.

  - The format of the key listing has been changed to better identify
the properties of a key.

  - The gpg-agent may now be used on Windows as a Pageant replacement
for Putty in the same way it is used for years on Unix as
ssh-agent replacement.

  - Creation of X.509 certificates has been improved. It is now also
possible to export them directly in PKCS#8 and PEM format for use
on TLS servers.

A detailed description of the changes can be found at
https://gnupg.org/faq/whats-new-in-2.1.html .

Getting the Software

Please follow the instructions found at https://gnupg.org/download/ or
read on:

GnuPG 2.1.0 may be downloaded from one of the GnuPG mirror sites or
direct from its primary FTP server. The list of mirrors can be found
at https://gnupg.org/mirrors.html . Note that GnuPG is not available
at ftp.gnu.org.

On ftp.gnupg.org you find these files:

 ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gnupg/gnupg-2.1.0.tar.bz2 (3039k)
 ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/gnupg/gnupg-2.1.0.tar.bz2.sig

This is the GnuPG 2.1 source code compressed using BZIP2 and its
OpenPGP signature.

 ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/binary/gnupg-w32-2.1.0_20141105.exe (6225k)
 ftp://ftp.gnupg.org/gcrypt/binary/gnupg-w32-2.1.0_20141105.exe.sig

This is an experimental installer for Windows including GPA as
graphical key manager and GpgEX as an Explorer extension. Please
de-install an already installed Gpg4win version before trying this
installer. This binary version has not been tested very well, thus it
is likely that you will run into problems. The complete source code
for the software included in this installer is in the same directory;
use the suffix ".tar.xz" instead of ".exe".

Although several beta versions have been released over the course of
the last years, no extensive public field test has been done. Thus it
is likely that bugs will show up. Please check the mailing list
archives and the new wiki https://wiki.gnupg.org for latest
information on known problems and workaround.

Checking the Integrity
==

In order to check that the version of GnuPG which you are going to
install is an original and unmodified one, you can do it in one of
the following ways:

 * If you already have a version of GnuPG
