An introduction to alternatives to market economy.

>From the Sustaining the Knowledge Commons project, this short text wants to
introduce a few ideas on alternate modes of exchange.

In order to rethink the current publication system, a little bit of theory
might be inspiring, by way of Marcel Mauss and a near century old text on
gift economy. Rivalry, prestige and moral obligations included.

Are there other modes of exchange besides the market? Are we overestimating
the place of market exchange when we look at the nature of human
transactions? If so, are there lessons to be learned concerning possible
approaches to sustaining the knowledge commons?

For those interested in reading the original text by Marcel Mauss, I found
the footnotes/endnotes to be a window into a candid, scholarly, inquiry of
the time aimed at making sense of rich and diverse information about human
collectives.
