Gulf Goans one-day Nine-a-side Football trophy to captain of Vaxim Divar
Dubai captain and former Dempo Sports Club player Orlando Viegas. Also see

Bruno Coutinho (Arjuna Awardee), Camilo Gonsalves, Lawrence Gomes, Savio
Maderia, Franky Barreto, Chandrakant Naik and Flaviano Leitao ( not in the
picture) were the seven former India internationals who participated in the
1st Intra Gulf Goans one-day Nine-a-side Football tournament in Doha Qatar
on Friday.
The Goa veterans teams which took part in the 1st Intra Gulf Goans one-day
Nine-a-side Football organised by the Goan Welfare Association (GWA)
Doha-Qatar.
Vaxim Divar, Dubai won the 1st Intra Gulf Goans one-day Nine-a-side Football
Tournament, organised by the Goan Welfare Association (GWA) Doha-Qatar
defeating Santos United, Kuwait 4-3 in the penalty shoot-out, at the Al Ahli
Stadium on Friday.
Winners: Vaxim Divar, Dubai
Runners-Up: Santos United, Kuwait
At the end of the full time play the teams were locked goaless, on account
of which the tie-breaker system had to be applied to break the deadlock.
Vaxim Divar scored through Orlando Viegas, Adler D'Cruz, Collin D'Cruz and
Dino Dias in the tie-breaker while Tiago Fernandes, Godwin Fernandes and
Jimmy Gouveia were successful in finding the mark for Santos United.
Savio Messais, Secretary of Goa Football Association (GFA) was the chief
guest for the tournament. He said that GFA plans to have a similar
tournament in Goa for Goans based in different parts of the world.
"Organising a tournament of such magnitude within a short time requires a
lot of effort and team work. The successful staging of the event shows the
commitment and dedication of Goans to the football cause.
While appreciating the organisers of the tournament for its grand success.
He assured full co-operation and support on behalf of GFA for more events in
the future.
"We have a plan of orgainising an event in Goa on similar lines," he added.

Antonio Marcus Pacheco, goalkeeper's coach of Indian team who was the guest
of honour said: "Tournaments of such nature help us to revive old memories
and share the old Goan football memories with Goan footballers who are
working in the Gulf Countries. The organizers have done a splendid job. The
Goan football spirit is kept alive by such events and they also such bring
Goan Community working in Gulf countries together.
Jassim Ali Mohamed Ibrahim, ex-Qatar football player was the special guest.

The other guests who attended the final were Dr Mohan Thomas, President of
ICBF, Divaker Poojary, General Secretary of ICBF, Lester Morgan Fernandes,
Sales Manager of Qatar Industrial & Equipment, Savio Saldanha, General
Manager of Doha Motors and Joe Alvito Carvalho, a senior Goan based in
Qatar.
Simon D'Silva, President of GWA welcomed chief guest and special invitees.
On behalf of GWA, D'Silva presented token of appreciation momentos to
Messais, Pacheco, Jassim Ali Mohd Ibrahim and Sequeira.
On behalf of GWA, D'Silva also received a momento in recognition for
organizing the tournament from the Chairman of Bahrain Goans Football
League, Gaspar Crasto.
All the players from participating teams were awarded with medals.

He thanked all the participating teams for their sportsmanship in making
this tournament a memorable one in Qatar.
"It was not easy job to arrange around 200 visas. Thanks to the support and
hard work put up by the Managing Committee and in particular Jerson
Sequeira, Chief Coordinator of the event."
He also thanked Savio Messais for his support in getting the Goa Veterans in
Qatar. Simon also thanked all the Local Team Managers for the splendid
support.
Jerson Sequeira, chief co-ordinator of the tournament was felicitated for
his hard work in organising this tournament and making it a historic one.

ESCORTS / FUTURE FOOTBALLERS
The ten teams which participated in the tournament were Goa Veterans, Santos
United Kuwait, Navelim Youth Centre-Kuwait, Bahrain Goans, BSB Bahrain,
Vaxim Divar - Dubai, ABC Benaulim - Dubai, Aldona United - Dubai, GWA Red
and GWA Blue.
Seven ex-international players who represented India participated in this
tournament. Bruno Coutinho (Arjuna Awardee), Camilo Gonsalves, Lawrence
Gomes, Savio Maderia, Franky Barreto, Chandrakant Naik and Flaviano Leitao.
Martin Mascarenhas, vice president for sport at GWA proposed the vote of
thanks.
Lester Gracias who specially flown in from Dubai kept the tempo live during
the entire day with his amicable style of compere-ing.

rewarded with "Token of Appreciation" trophies.
