Dear Cybergaokars on GoaNet, Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 13th January will focus on Organic Farming and its future in Goa. Fr. Inacio Almeida of the Pilar Nature Farm will lead the discussion at the Balcao and share his experiences in Organic Farming and its future in Goa. Fr. Almeida is a veteran in organic farming and has been a pioneer in the use of EM (Effective Microbes) technology to increase the yield of fruit and vegetables on the farm. His most recent experiment has been in cultivating Jetropa which is used to produce bio-diesel. Fr. Almeida a strong advocate of the use of organic manure is convinced that organic farming has a bright future in Goa. What then can be done at the community level to promote organic farming in Goa ? What incentives are available from the Agriculture Department to undertake organic farming ? Is organic farming a viable option for youth thinking of self- employment in the village ? What is the market for produce from organic farming in the context of the huge demand for vegetables & fruits from residents and tourists in Goa ? Are the Village Panchayats doing enough to promote organic farming ? The Balcao discussion will cover these questions and also evolve an agenda for action by citizens on the issue. Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public.
