The Department is of the firm belief that increasing coastal erosion is already taking its toll on human life with an increasing number of drowning deaths during the last year and a half. This, it is feared, may also have an impact on shacks as the beach belt is found to be narrowing at various locations. According to highly placed officials, a survey of the States beach belt for allotment of shacks for the tourism season 2005-06 has revealed that the coastline is eroding and more rapidly during the last two years and may cause problems for the allotment of shacks in future.According to officials, an acute problem has been noted in Sinquerim, Baga and Palolem. However, NIO which is already researching on this, has pointed out to similar problems at Betalbatim in South Goa and Anjuna, in the North. A researcher, Dr S Kumar from sponsored project division at NIO pointed out that Sinquerim (near Fort Aguada) is one of the worst affected areas and what used to be a 10 meter wide beach belt has been reduced to less that five meters. Similarly, seasonal variations in the beach belts of Miramar and Colva have also been noticed. Confirming the receipt of a communiqué from the Tourism Department, the NIO today said that it may not conduct any special study on the sea behaviour or coastal erosion, details of which have been sought for by the department, as a research is already being conducted. However, it proposes to conduct regular checks and surveillance on the beaches of Goa, before and after the monsoons which, it opines, will help it to throw more light on the growing concerns on issues raised by the Tourism Department. ---------------------- HERALD 31/03/06 page 1 ---------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ---------------------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] website: www.goacan.org ----------------------------------------------------------------------
