Residents abandoned their homes, especially apartments in highrise buildings, while others including occupants of office buildings were evacuated immediately.
The mild tremors went unnoticed for many, but the news spread quickly, and within 15 minutes of the earthquake, the emergency numbers at municipalities and the weather offices in Dubai and Sharjah were ringing off their hooks. A scientist from the UAE University confirmed the tremors to Khaleej Times but refused to say how strong they were on the Richter Scale. AFP adds: Teheran - A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter Scale struck Irans southern coastline on Sunday, state media said. The report said the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 1:52 pm (1023 GMT), was near the Gulf island of Qeshm. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. The quake was also felt across the Gulf in the United Arab Emirates where residents fled high-rise office and apartment blocs. I took my baby and ran down the 10 flights to the street, one alarmed resident of Dubai told AFP. The temblor was also felt in the neighbouring UAE emirates of Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah, residents said. Khaleejtimes.com __________________________________ Yahoo!
